I want to transfer after one year at the state university I will be attending this fall. I was wondering when I would need to apply for things if I want to transfer out after one year and enter a new school sophomore year. (FYI: I have poor high school grades)

Some schools may not allow you to transfer into their university until you’ve earned at least 30 credits by the time of applying (which most likely won’t be until after your freshman year is over, in which case, you’ll usually be too late to apply for the subsequent fall semester)

If you have poor high school grades, I suggest applying during the second half of your sophomore year since a lot of schools place very little emphasis on your hs records at that point.

As far as when to start sending everything in, check the admission dates for each school you’d like to apply to.

I agree with east89 that with poor HS grades, it will be much easier to transfer as a jr because when transferring as a soph, your HS record and and test scores will still be very important as you will only have completed one sem/qt of college when you apply.

Yes, you need to check their websites and read the transfer timetable and eligibility for each school you are interested in as they will vary. That said, in general, many transfer application deadlines are in the late winter/early spring.
