Can someone give me some information about New School University?

I've been to their website and everything, but I'm still confused. I can't even find it on collegeboard.com I have a bunch of questions.

Is this school reputable at all? I'm not looking on a Harvard level here.

To pursue English/writing, would I apply to the school of General Studies or the school of Liberal Arts?

How many students attend New School? Is it big? Tiny?

Anything else would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

I lived in NY and also know something about New School. They are interesting to say the least. Their have an endowment around 500 million. They are comprised of 7 schools if I remember. Their schools are very autonimous. For example, the Mannes School of Music and Parson's School of Design is part of the New School. Each has their own separate curriculum and admissions. Think of it as 7 independent schools all under one umbrella; however, you can take courses located within the other schools.

They are fully accredited. They are different in that I don't think that they have any science or math majors.New Schools specializes in liberal arts, and philosophy related majors. However, from what I remember, they do NOT have an undergraduate degree in English, but I know that they do have programs in literature and writing.
They also have an undergraduate degree in liberal arts. In fact, when I checked their web site, I don't even think that they have a graduate program in English per se. If I were you, I would check out the Eugene Lang School of Liberal Arts. This school houses their language and writing programs.

New School is a mid sized school. Most of their programs, however, are graduate programs, with the exceptions of the Mannes School of Music and Parson's College of Art and Design, New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and New School of Drama. Also, as I mentioned, they do offer a BA in liberal arts too.

If you want to check them out, go to:http://www.socialresearch.newschool.edu/about/nsu.htm

As for their reputation, all of the programs that they do have are considered quite good. For example, their Mannes School of Music and Parson's College of Design, which I have some familiarity, have some highly rated programs. I can't imagine New School having any terrible programs; however, as you noted, they aren't Harvard.

Whew, this was probably more information than you needed.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

I should note that I checked out their web site. It is unclear whether the programs in literature and writing are undergraduate in nature or are "continuing education." I think that you should call the school and ask them. I agre that their general web site isn't very clear as to what majors are offered at each school. You would probably have to check out each school's web site for major offerings.

Here is the Eugene Lang's School's url:http://www.lang.newschool.edu/

lIf you want to call them, here is the number for admissions: 212-229-5665

If you want to look up information on sites like Collegeboard or Princeton Review, thenfew, that I know, rfer to all you need to look up the individual schools, very few refer to all of the school collectively as New School University. At college board, you have to look under Eugene Lang/New School or look up Parson & Mannie.
