There have been many social and economic effects of the global flow of silver from the mid 1500's to the early 1700's. According to the documents the silver trade seems to raise many issues all over the world. One of the most critical issues were economic and social effects. The Social effects can be seen in Doc.6 by a Spanish priest, Doc. 7 by a Ming official and Doc. 8 by an English Scholar. The economic effects are made apparent in Doc. 2 by a Spanish scholar, Doc. 3 by a Ming Dynasty court official, and Doc. 4 by a British Merchant. Having a document from a spanish native working in the silver mines would have helped in analyzing the social effects of the silver trade.

The Silver trade had a great affect on consumers and workers within a country. Indian workers have worked so hard to obtain silver to send to Spain creating future dependance on European Powers due to the "huge amount of wealth taken out of the range" (Doc. 6). This document may have been biased because it was written by a Spanish Priest fighting for the protection of the Native Indians. The exploitation of foreigner's can be made prevalent when they raise the price from "100 bars of silver to 200 or 300"(Doc. 7). This is similar to British Colonists in North America who had to buy British good at raised prices. Also once the British realised that the loss of silver was bad they tried to stop the trade but failed. " But since Euripe has tasted of this luxury... it can never be advisable for England to quit." (Doc. 8). This document is also biased because he is a scholar and does not understand that the people have emotional addictions to luxury goods.
The Silver trade also had an affect on economies. Due to China's desire to only trade for silver, "silver currency flowed out of" European Countries. (Doc.2). One of Britain's responses to this unequal trade of silver and goods was the opium trade. The Chinese people desired opium and caused the reverse flow of silver back into Europe. The silver trade also led to "low return on labor"(doc 3) due to all of the silver being sucked into the hands of the Chinese government through taxes. The Portugeuse have used silver from Japan to "bring from China gold, perfume, silk and other luxury goods." (Doc. 4) As a result this furthered the flow of silver into China and only luxury goods coming out. The silver trade also changed China's economy from a bartering system to a currency system. "you could pay for cloth with rice, wheat, chickens... now you recieve a bill which must be payed with silver." (Doc. 5). This is biased because it was by a chinese writer trying to prove his point in his essay about the changing times.
Overall the silver trade has affected many social groups and economies, Spanning anything from the exploitation of developing nations to the total evolution of the Chinese economies. Another document that would have been helpful would have been from the Japanese about the effects of the silver trade with Portugal on them.
