<p>Prompt: "Do you think that ease does not challenge us and that we need adversity to help us discover who we are?"</p>
<pre><code> Obstacles and challenges are crucial to growth, learning, and ultimately success. Ease, in fact, stunts personal growth. As shown from examples in literature, observations, and personal experience, meeting challenges and overcoming them helps one discover one's true potential.
One example in literature that shows the importance of overcoming obstacles is "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" by J.K. Rowling. Harry is entangled in a predicament: he is unwillingly chosen to be a contestant in the Triwizard Tournament. During the course of his journey, Harry had to contend with puzzling riddles, threats, and witnessing the death of a fellow student. These challenges gave Harry insight into his own character and allowed him to win the Triwizard Tournament.
The author of the Harry Potter series, J.K> Rowling, also met great challenges prior to her success with her writing. She was completely broke and her husband left her with children to care for on her own. Instead of retreating into doldrums and resignation, Rowling faced these obstacles and worked painstakingly hard to finish her first novel. In the end, Rowling surprised herself when her book became a bestseller. The adversity Rowling endured caused her to discover her abilities as a writer.
In my own experience, facing adversity also has proven to give me insight into myself and brought me success after overcoming obstacles. I had entered an annual piano competition for three years but never won any title until last year, when I was given a dingy honorable mention. I felt humiliated because I had pt in hours of practice. However this year, I not only practiced, but I also told myself to only focus on the music, and not about winning. By facing the challenge of this competition with determination, I ultimately learned about my capacities as a pianist and as a person. Overcoming my obstacles did bring me success: I placed first this year.
Facing adversity is a keystone to success and discovering one's potential. Ease, on the other hand, offers no challenge, and therefore does not stimulate growth in insight and character.
