can someone help me calculate my financial aid?

Can you guys help me calculate my financial aid for UCSD? Here is the info from tritonlink:

Direct Costs (Fees & Health Insurance) $13,227
Books and Supplies + $1,456
Living Expenses + $13,907
Total UCSD Cost = $28,590

Total Gift Aid $19,190
Options Available to Meet Net Cost $9,400
Total Estimated Aid = $28,590

Pell Grant $5,550
Possible Cal Grant A + $11,124
UCSD Grant + $2,516
Other Outside Aid + $0

Total Gift Aid = $19,190
Total Net Cost = $9,400

Total Student's Share = $9,100
Federal Work-Study $2,800
Perkins/University Loan + $800
Federal Direct Subsidized Loan + $3,500
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan + $2,000

Total Parent's Share = $300
Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Parents + $300

Total Options to Meet Net Cost = $9,400

So are my calculations right:
The total cost of attending UCSD is 28,590 and with my grants I have to pay 9,400. Subtracting work study, that's going to be 6,600 a year or 26, 400 for four years? Why is it so expensive? I didn't think I would need that much in loans to attend a public university or did I calculate something wrong? Also, how much are the interest rates on the unsubsidized loans because that will surely raise the cost of attending UCSD for me...

If my calculations are correct, is it worth attending UCSD if I have to pay 26,400?

that’s over four years. unless you’re getting a full ride from another school, i’d just take it.

(fyi, college isn’t free.)

Well not technically a full-ride but I got accepted into UCI and since tuition is paid for from grants, I can commute which will save money on living expensives and such. I was leaning towards UCSD too… in all honesty, is it worth it?

there are people paying over that much for EACH YEAR they attend UCSD, so of course it’s worth it.

if you have local health insurance (covered by your parents or something) you can fill out a health insurance waiver that refunds you $290 a quarter…so that would be another $870 that you wouldnt have to pay a year. If you needed to use health services, many of the services are still free, or you just pay a small fee. ie, primary care appointments/nurse visits are still free if you do not have ship, and if you needed to go to urgent care your copay is $30 instead of $20. If you wanted to do things like shots/vaccinations (like HPV, assuming youre a girl) it would be cheaper over the multiple shots you need to just have ship. Heres their list of services/fees

I have the same aid package at UCSD and UCD. UCD gave me more, but the expenses also exceeded UCSD’s so it evened out. I actually don’t mind taking out loans, since I know I’m getting a better deal than a LOT of people, so I’m grateful.

It’s possible we may be able to get better paying jobs when we get older or become an RA, so it might not be 26,400.

Anyway, does the tuition we pay change every year? Just wondering, since my brother at UCSC apparently has the same aid package or something? He was vague.

FYI
Reducing your budget by eliminating health insurance or living at home WILL NOT save you any money.

Why wouldn’t living at home & eliminating the health insurance save $??? I’m confused.

your lucky I have no finacial aid. $80000 over for years.

yeah i’m confused too, why wouldn’t commuting save money?

Because any reduction in your budget will result in a corresponding reduction in grants. Yes, money will be saved, but not for you.

Does the health insurance at UCSD cover dental stuff too?

Do you have to get health insurance? I already have it

^ google for the health insurance waiver

@sunfish

i have all the things op has, and i ususally have to take out a few extra loans to cover the rest of my expenses each quarter, and waiving my health insurance does NOT change any of my grants, work story, loans, or fin aid. So in fact I do save money. If i had a ‘full ride’ with grants and scholarships, then yes it wouldnt make a difference because they would just reduce whatever ucsd aid i am getting (like blue and gold for example). But since I still have to take a little bit of loans each year, refunding my ship insurance does give me a little more room with my money, none of my aid is reduced.

^^ It was a loop hole for many UC’s in the past. Berkeley closed it last year by holding up SHIP disbursement long after the waiver deadline. With ongoing budget crisis, I think your luck may run out this year in other UC campuses.

No, it did make a difference up until at least last year.

well, since ive been getting grants from state and ucsd for the past four years, some years even with pell and others without, i think i would know if they reduced grants after i sent in my yearly ship waiver. it didnt, and hasnt. so the point is moot

30 G for 4 years is nothing, and lets be real, over time the grants will go down. go to the school thats better for you, if there that close in price.
