So, I got a 79/100 on a midterm. My professor released the data...so median was a 79.5, range was a 5-100; average was a 74, and the mode was an 85.

So my question is...should i not take this class for a letter grade? lol.

i know the median is the middle value...with half to the left and half to the right. but i still don't quite understand this. could someone explain this to me? without calling me an idiot lol. i'd like to be informed about this, so i can make such decisions in the future.

The median is 79.5, so 79.5=B-. You got a 79, so you would be at a B- in the class. If you’re fine with that, then take it for a letter grade. Otherwise, do P/NP. Of course, if you just do good on the final, then that would be better than switching to P/NP.

Your grade is just a smidge below the median, which is an okay place to be. It just means you have to work harder to get a better grade.

For clarification, you’re in the upper part of the bell curve of scores, and it’s skewed left, which is what professors like. This is because it shows most of the class is doing well. If the rest of your grade is fine (if you have other grades), you’ll just have to do really well the rest of the semester.

thank you guys. i’ll probably change it for a p/np grade. this is supposed to be an easy class. his previous midterms were incredibly easy and i could answer them without even studying. now his actual midterm that we got…the questions were incredibly vague. but i guess it was just me that did bad, since the mode was 86…
