I'm going into engineering, and am thinking of applying to these colleges so far:
Cornell
USC
Northwestern
Carnegie Mellon
and maybe Rice

Do you have any other suggestions for me? I'm looking for schools with smaller names but around the same caliber as these (20-35% acceptance). Or do you think these are enough? Im also applying to public colleges (UC's and cal states). any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Lehigh, Notre Dame, Tufts, Bucknell, Rochester, Georgia Tech, Boston University?

^^not sure notre dame is known for engineering, nor is bu.

By smaller names do you mean physically, like 6 letters, or prestige? or size?(but usc is huge compared to the others)

thanks Schmaltz

collegebound41: i mean like a little less prestigious =)

Michigan, Penn, Wash U, Illinois and Purdue have strong engine programs

The list you have, along with some UCs, is a great list. Is Berkeley on your list?
Illinois
Michigan
Princeton

collegehelp: thanks! and yes, berkeley is on my list =)

res ipsa: thanks also!

btw do any of you know any privates with lower acceptance rates than these? i think i have enough reach schools on my list(15-25%) , but i still need more match schools (25-40%). im looking for schools such as bucknell and rensselaer. thanks!

Notre Dame and Boston U are both good in engineering.

Low match? Purdue and IIT in chicago
