Can someone please chance me. I've posted this 3 times without a repsonse.

I am applying as an engineering major to some top universities, and I was wondering what you think my chances are. I'd really appreciate an estimate for my reach schools. Thanks.

Schools

Safety
University of Delaware
Drexel (already in)
Lafayette College
Northeastern University

Good Chance
Bucknell University
Lehigh University
Villanova University

Reach
Duke University
Johns Hopkins University
Tufts University
Cornell University
University of Virginia

Here are my stats

SATs
Math- 750
Critical Reading- 800
Writing- 780
Total- 2330

SAT II
Math (II) - 800
Physics - 800
Chemistry - 760

Grades
9th Grade- 3.3 (not calculated in my official GPA but schools see it)
10th Grade - 3.85
11th Grade - 3.77
12 Grade - 4.00

GPA (official) - 3.87
GPA (including 9th grade) - 3.73

Class Rank 39/550

I'm hoping the upward trend will help to nullify the 9th grade, but if it comes down to the wire my guess is that I'll get the axe because of 9th grade (my counselor told me that schools don't see ninth grade because it's a transition period, this was a lie). BTW, I have taken almost all honors or AP classes with the exception of Geometry and Analysis which I took accelerated, but then moved to BC Calculus. I'm hoping that they won't hold this against me because I have an A in BC calc and I can clearly do math, but you never know. Also, this year I'm taking the three hardest classes in my school (often referred to as a triumvirate of impossibleness when taken together). These are AP Physics 1 and 2 (C with Mechanics electricity and magnetism), AP Chemistry, BC Calculus. I have A's or A+'s in these classes.

I have pretty good extra-curriculars. I ran track (indoor and outdoor) for three and four years respectively and earned varsity medals... I ran varsity cross country in 12th grade. As far as awards go I have the typical list: NHS, Science NHS, National Merit Semi-finalist, Distinguished Honor Roll... the list goes on, but I know that colleges don't need to see that you've been honored by your principal to know how smart you are. The point is that I have the typical grocery list of academic achievements that everyone applying to these schools has.

I believe that my essays are very good. My second cousin, who is a professor of writing at Villanova, offered to read them and she said they were very good.

Thanks for reading this. I don't mean to come off as pretentious at any point (I hate all the pretentious posts on this website by the way). I'm trying to present as much information as possible.

class rank?

Class rank is up now, why does everyone else get hundreds of views and 10+ responses but mine get nothing?

How about Carnegie Mellon and Rice?

You have great SAT’s but your GPA seems a little low for your reaches.

Yeah, I didn’t love CM and Rice is too far for me.

The reason you may not get lots of responses is that the way you have ranked your schools appears fairly accurate. You seem to have a realistic view of your chances.

Very nice. Don’t sweat the Freshman 3.3. If you’re worried, explain to them how hard your curriculum is and how much you love a good challenge, even if it occasionally means not having an easy A. Phrase it better than I put it, though. While they do see 9th grade, it does not matter as much as 10th and 11th.

Fine for all your safeties and Lehigh. Boss standardizeds and lots of APs and math/science talent.

You never know with Ivies. Nobody has a good chance there (don’t let anyone tell you otherwise), but with your scores, go ahead and apply. You might make yourself a very happy man for doing so. Make sure to interview and show them your personality. Prove that you already are a Cornell man and that it would fit you perfectly. Prove you will bring your talents to the school and also some cool interests. Talk about what you like to study and extracurriculars.

Tufts can be funny. Show them your talents. They have all sorts of neat extracurriculars going on on their campus, so you need to show them that you know how to be involved. If you do that, you’re in there. Make sure to do the “optional” essay.

Duke is harder, but once again, extracurriculars, especially a big gulp of service, will give you a better chance.

Can’t help you with Johns Hopkins or UVA. Sorry. Don’t know anything about them.

Transferring out of a class that is apocalyptically hard beats staying in it and failing, but it sounds like neither was the case for you. Why did you transfer out?

Get some sweet recommendations from people who really know you. They should be able to see the kind of student you would be in their classroom.

ECs are an issue, though. Running track and xc are nice, but other things would definitely make you more interesting. Start a student group or do a bunch of service. It’s never too late. I wish I realized that the first time I applied… Maybe you could tutor kids. Seriously, this is your only weakness. The GPA isn’t bad and with those SATs, they know you’re smart. Just do something outside of school and track. Model UN is a blast and requires talent.

I’m glad the essays seemed to pass muster. What a great source of help!

Best of luck. Hope this helps. Can you chance me? Mine is called Crossing My Fingers. Thanks.

Peace.

Wow talk about a corrupt school…I wish my counselor would take my Freshman GPA out of the official. Btw, I say you are in at all schools, maybe denied from Duke, but I’d say in.

Wheretogo1,

Why do you list Lafayette College as a safety for engineering/male applicant? Just curious to know your reasoning.

Because of your great scores, all your reach scores are plausible. None are “absolutely 0%”. All your reaches are fair reaches (none of them are high reaches). Good luck.

“Transferring out of a class that is apocalyptically hard beats staying in it and failing, but it sounds like neither was the case for you. Why did you transfer out?”

I didn’t transfer out of these classes, I got A’s in them. The point was that they were not the hardest classes I could have taken at the time (at my school there is remedial, regular, accelerated, and honors level courses) so my course load wasn’t the absolute hardest I could make it at my school (it’s pretty close though).

“Why do you list Lafayette College as a safety for engineering/male applicant? Just curious to know your reasoning.”

I visited Lafayette and talked to one of the admissions officers there. I made a good connection and the woman seemed pretty sure that I would get in, and this was before I got a 2330 on the SAT. The first time I took it I was sick and got a 2180. I’m pretty sure I’ll get in, but you’re right, there’s always a chance I won’t.

your SATs are really great and your ECs are good enough
You’ll def get into safetys and good chances. No one really knows about the reachs you have listed but you are def in the running. If I would admissions, your crazy high SATs would more than make up for your freshman GPA.

Chance me! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/811378-chance-swarthmore.html

Good luck, wheretogo 1. I hope that you get into all your schools. You will get a great education and it will all fall into place for you.

wow, 2330 is very nice, ull end up prob 1 of ur reach schools

hey chance me back.
Ivy League 2014/others?

Your reaches are reaches because of your class rank, but you have a shot at any of them. You are in all the remainder.
