I’m a high school senior with these stats:
- 4.25 w gpa, 3.85uw gpa (very competitive high school and county doesn’t rank)
- 33 act, 34 superscored
- 5 APs, rest honors: AP human, AP env. science, AP Psych, AP Physics C Mechanics, AP Calc AB
- decent ec: varsity rowing for 3 years (quit senior year due to injury), orchestra for all 4 years with a fine arts honor society, longstanding babysitting agreement my junior and senior year for 10-12 hours a week. (a couple other small things but those are my big ones)
- female and hispanic (I don’t know if that matters, but I thought I would include it)
- Teacher and counselor recs are decent, nothing great I’m guessing
- I think my essays are decent- some are pretty good, some are average
- Georgia Resident with no legacies/ connections
Im applying as a business/ finance major to:
- ED to NYU Stern
- Georgia Tech EA
- UGA EA
- Clemson honors
- Georgia State
- UVA
- Univ. Southern California
- UF
- U Miami
- UT Austin
- Kings College London
- University College London
- University of Edinburgh
- Northeastern
Im the most interested in NYU (I’m applying ED), Kings College, Georgia Tech, and USC so if you could chance me I would appreciate it!
Thanks!!!
I feel you have compiled a fairly balanced college list. Good Job!
In terms of opportunities at Georgia Tech, I recommend Industrial Engineering rather than Business. Georgia Tech isn’t the best when it comes to finance but consulting firms/Top Tech companies/Corporate Finance all recruit here.
Industrial Engineering majors are definitely given the edge rather than Scheller students.
Before you apply to these other reach schools, you’ll need to figure out first if you can afford them. If you can’t afford it now, that’s not going to change with an acceptance letter either.
The OOS admission rate for UT Austin is 8%. To further complicate matters, UT admits by the major not to the university. Because the McCombs School of Business is one of the most popular majors, it makes admission even more competitive.
Your GPA is good but you have a limited number of APs. UT does not consider the fact that you go to a “very competitive high school”. UT is interested in how well YOU did in school not how impressive your classmates are. Your ECs will certainly not hurt your application, but they will not help either. Lastly, UT does not super-score ACT or SAT scores.
OOS tuition is close to $60k per year with very little or no merit aid offered. The application is lengthy and quite cumbersome. Unless UT is your dream school, I would probably save my time and application fee and concentrate my energy elsewhere. You have a lot of great options!
IMPORTANT CAVEAT:
If you achieved National Hispanic Recognition from the National College Board that could set you apart and could very well grab UT’s attention.
Thanks for the insight! Im applying to NYU stern ed so I will definitely wait to hear back from them before starting UT Austins app.
