Can someone please give me some hints with the SSAT

idk which one I should choose between SPS or Andover to apply because I need 1 more school on my list.
I would want to heard from previous applicant what made their essays and interviews stand...

Wait, are you asking for help on the SSAT, which school to choose, or about essays and interviews…?

I’m askin for tips someone has to provide me on any of those topic

SSATs: buy flashcards. read a good-quality newspaper (aka: the ny times. not Us weekly.)

as for SPS/andover… that’s totally a personal thing. both are superb in academics but for dance, SPS has an edge. for football, andover has an edge. etc etc.
try to visit? or maybe focus on their size… mid-size as opposed to large? which would you prefer? honestly, it’s comparing apples and oranges. you could go with either. :)

DiveAlive: Idk but flashcards do not work for me. thxss for the newspaper info!!
If I ask which one between SPS and Andover has a writing and humaniterian focus.

tbh, i have no clue, haha. andover is reputed to be strong in like, liberal arts (writing, history, etc) but SPS’s academics are really strong so i doubt that there would be too much of a difference. however, if you’re really into writing, you should definitely look into middlesex & loomis. as for humanities… eh, andover? : P

Lindha both have amazing writing and humanities and a huge choice of humanities electives, you’re really splitting hairs with that decision. If you want a focus on those aspects, both the schools should be on your list and another should be thrown off.

ImCrazy I could only afford to pay application fees for 3 schools because I’m applying to BS without my mother agreement. So I have Choate, Andover, Deerfield and SPS. So which one u think I should cut out?

I can’t really say, I have expereince with all the schools other than Choate. Is there anyway your parents will lend you the money for 1 extra school? You can waive the fees and get your money back.

I would waive the fees; they’re all great schools!

If you can’t, though… personally, I would cut out Choate or Deerfield… Andover & SPS are more my type (as far as I know, I haven’t applied yet); don’t know if it would be the same for you, though.

WAAAAAAAIVE ITTTT!

WAIVE FEES I never heard of that…How am I suppose do that?
Imcrazy-Mother won’t lead me money for any because she is not aware Im applyin. So if I ask her now, I will have to convince her and that will take like months. I cannot afford lose time now tryin to convince her.
tolemons.can.fly thxs for ur honesty.

DiveAlive r u a current BS student?

Oh, oops - when I said “waive”, I meant with a family or friend.

BUT SPEAKING OF WHICH… I emailed Andover a while back and they do pay SSATs for people who can’t afford it!

I would suggest telling your parents, though. If/when you get accepted, what are you going to tell her?

Since you’re going behind her back and applying, if you tell her and she says no, can’t you apply behind her back anyways? So it’d be a) have her support, not go broke, and have more money to apply to more schools = more chances, or b) do what you’re doing now anyways…

do make sure that you have something to fall back on, though, like a safety, if you’re really set on boarding school, because the school’s you’ve named are all top-tier. and good luck persuading your mom!

padfoot_rox Yea I do have safety schools but they are independent day school here in NYC!! Is like Im just tryin my luck for the TOP schools. Thxs for my mom. If I may ask r u an applicant?

lemons.can.fly About the SSAt I can afford that on my own is ok but thxs though.
Of course if I get accpeted I’m goin to tell her. Thats where I will convince her EASILY(perhaps)…For example, I will be like mother I got accpeted into the top schools will FA(which I really do need). I will made my teachers and principal call her to convince too. It will perhaps take like 5 months for her to finally accept it but I will try So hard expecially if I get in those tops.

Though this is a totally personal thing, I would cut out Deerfield. Idk, it’s just that the preppy-vibe there puts me off. But I’m not saying it’s a bad school, it’s one of the best ones out there. It’s a personal choice. It might not be the same for you at all.

For the SSAT…hmm…I would say that the suggestion of reading a newspaper is really good. Just practise the test a bit and get familiar with the format - while giving the real test time management is a problem, so make sure that you’re good with that. I used the Kaplan book and was pretty saisfied with it. Vocab building does really help (I like flashcards, but maybe something else works for you?)

The schools do really care about the student’s own initiative to apply (as opposed to being forced by parents), so the fact that you’re doing this behind your parents’ backs says a lot about you.
Good luck for the whole process!

RakG- Thxs for ur personal opinion and suggestion!!
do u know where I could find the kaplan book?
I think read the vocab over and over might work for me but flashcards no way!

The Kaplan book…it’s not available in my country so I just got it from amazon.com, but I think you should get it at any bookstore (such as B&N, borders) but I may be wrong on this.

i might just buy it online

@ lindha: nope, i’m applying for entrance in fall '10, just like you.

out of C, A, D, and SPS, i’d consider cutting either C or D… however, all of them are totally fantabulous schools. sooo, good luck :D
