Okay, I've made a bunch of topics, but I want to try and maybe consolidate them into this one. First, here are my stats:

ACT - 28 (24s/28m/32v/29w)
SAT - 700m/650w/600v = 1950

GPA - 4.2 w / 3.7 uw

Varisty Track Team
School Newspaper(Editor in Chief)

-Some key club hours

I'm hispanic male.

Senior Class

AP Calculus
AP Gov
AP Economics
AP English

AP Tests:
AP Computer Science A - 5
AP US History - 2
Haven't taken the ones from Senior year yet obviosuly.

Class rank 17/335 (~6%)

So I'm looking for a school in the southeast. I'm a Flordia resident and I want to major in Electrical and Computer Engineering. SOmehting in that field.

Can someone suggest for me safety/match/reaches.

Is Cornell even worth applying to. My mom tells me to apply to MIT, but I honestly believe that it is going to be a waste of money. However I think cornell is more of a reach/big reach then out of reach.

Definite Applications:
Univ of Florida (Safety)
G Tech (Match)
Darthmouth(Reach)

Questionable Apps:
Purdue
V Tech
Rice
Duke
Cornell

I know you're wondering how Dartmouth ended up on that list, but they paid for me to visit the school over the summer(travel/food/room&board), and the program I participated is supposed to help the acceptance rate. Apparently 70% of the 40 students who participate are accepted. So it's worht it to apply.

I think you should do VTech because it's always good to have two safeties. Neither one of those are extreme safeties, so I think either you do both VTech and UF, or one extreme safety (Central Florida State or something)

Purdue is a match I think unless you're doing engineering. So apply if you like it.

The other 3 are reaches, you should pick one or two and apply to them just for kicks.

Money is a situation with me though, so going out of state to a public university is not the strongest possibility. I have 100% scholarship to UF if I get in, but GTech, VTech, Cornell, and Purdue are all going to be toss ups if I even get in.

I want to do engineering all the way. Is VTech a good school? Better then UF?

Don't forget, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and UVA are state universities and Nick is a FL resident. G-Tech is about one-third out of state, V-Tech about one fourth, and UVA about one-fourth.

Did you attend Dartmouth Direct over the summer? My son attended the program, which is a visitation opportunity for multicultural students. If you are an URM it may change your chances at some of the schools you are interested in.

I participated in Destination Dartmouth, which is not quite the same thing. I am a hispanic. Does that qualify as a URM? Mom is Cuban, and Dad is Venezuelan.

I think you are an URM. My son is of Puerto Rican decent and went to Datmouth this summer on a diversiy weekend. Did you go this summer as well? Maybe it is the same program. (Jul7 31, 8/1). If you have a shot at Dartmouth, I would think you have a shot at Cornell and Rice as well, although your combined SAT CR and Math is 1300, is on the lower side. Your ec's are good, so you seem to be in goood shape. Of course, no one knows what would happen, but I don't think you are far off the mark.

VA Tech is NOT a reach for you. Definetly a match. It is good for engineering (engineering is one of the top majors there) but it is out of state so tuition will be like $17,700 which is still a bunch cheaper than those private schools mentioned. About 30% of Va Tech is OOS students...and when you think of how many students it has...30% is a lot of people.

Everything seems to point to Va Tech being better than UF (for engineering anyway).

Except UF is free. Money is a big issue. I did attend the Dartmouth program, but I don't know if it's the same one. It was July 27-31, and it was about 40 students. The payed for us to fly up their and spend the weekend. It was called Destination Dartmouth.

Thing is with public schools, I'm less likely to recieve financial aid, then with a private university.
