Can someone PLEASE talk about Honors Humanities

so there's a lot of info about scholars and honors and gemstones, but only every now and then is there the reference to the other supposedly elite program, Honors Humanities

anyone who knows anything about this program, prestige, whether or not its worth it, anything at all!

please post your thoughts and comments

My daughter got into Honors Humanities and I’ve been asking around to get info, but haven’t heard from anyone. Did you get in?

yes, i got in and i have been trying to find out information other than what the website tells. I would like views from students who are actually in the program or know of the people in the program but no such luck so far.

This thread was updated just today:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/659684-honors-humanities.html

My son was in Honors Humanities but decided to leave it after the first semester. He remains in Honors and loves his Honors classes, but he felt that the Honors Humanities requirements were more work than he wanted to take on.

The link for Honors Humanities doesn’t work! Get there through the website?

No, it’s on this forum. Just look down a few threads from this thread. It’s called Honors Humanities and was started by rabbisson. You posted on that thread yesterday. Today, Maximus has added to it.

Thanks - still trying to figure out how to use the site. Can you ‘bookmark’ certain schools to get back when you want?

Yes, in the Forum itself (after you back out of this thread), you can click on Forum Tools which is in the upper right corner underneath the page numbers, and click on “Subscribe to this Forum.” It will then notify you by email when new posts are made (daily or weekly). I don’t use that tool myself, but I have in the past.

Any time you post in a thread, it will have a red star next to it. That’s probably the easiest way to keep track of which threads that you have posted in.

OK here’s what I know about the program. It’s sort of a quirky program with some really talented kids and is a community within itself. The kids are amazing, bright and talented and yes, fun to be around. They study first semester ARHU 101 the nature of knowledge and read some really interesting stuff including ancient texts from India etc.

The leader of the program is a brilliant scholar who encourages the kids to explore ideas deeply and passionately. Each kid is responsible for a major project that is called the keystone project in order to fulfill the requirements for the HH citation. Some of the kids are writing novels, others plays, and still others are devising projects in the sciences or in the arts that speak to the nature of knowledge and social awareness.

There are approximately 50 freshman each year that join the program and it’s by invitation only, I believe. Some of the kids decide early that the requirements of the program or the subject matter is not their cup of tea and resign from HH. Others find the subject matter and the community very special. They are indeed a very select group of hard working, bright, and talented students.

Our s is a second semester freshman and loves the program. He’s actually looking forward to his keystone project and feels that he has the time to devote serious thought and work to that while also exploring his majors in a serious way.

I would say that the program gives the kids the feeling of being in an elite small private college/university at a large state U. Our s was accepted to a number of highly competitive and elite institutions and chose UMCP’s HH with a great scholarship. He even shared with me a few months into his first semester that he’d feel like a fool had he gone to Duke or WashU or UNC knowing how much he loves his experience at Maryland.

Those of you that have been invited to the program owe it to yourself to find out as much as you can and actually meet some of the profs that run it.

Congrats and good luck to all!

Talked to my son last night. He said he is still in Honors Humanities. He likes the HH classes, but hasn’t decided for sure if he wants to stay with the program.
