I wouldn't call it a total safety for me (That's UCSB), but it's a backup. I briefly visited the campus in March and thought it was very pretty. I loved my time in Mission Bay. I adore the ocean with all my heart.

Yet, I've heard people on CC call it extremely boring. Can someone who attends tell me a little more about the social life? I'm not exactly looking for Party Central but I definitely want to have a little fun in my college experience.

It all depends on the person, if they complain that it's boring then it's really their fault. I love it here so far, theres not enough time to do all the things you wanna do like go to the beach or intramural sports, etc.

the campus is a bit too large...
however. if you are willing to go to clubs, meet people, you'll have a really busy life and will hardly ever feel bored.

I spent a week there with my sister (she goes there) and the campus is huge. Don't forget, in La Jolla, there is also SD State, USD, and a bunch of other smaller colleges, so you shouldn't always limit yourself to life at UCSD. It's only a few minutes from the beach, and there's almost always something going on at the beach on weekends. It's not that there aren't any parties, but it's just not the highlight there. I wouldn't call it boring at all; you don't need to join a frat to have fun. There's so much to do out of class, PBL, intramural sports, etc. If you have the chance to visit before making your decision, you should definitely go. You just might fall in love with the area.

I'm a freshman here and I can definitely say it's not boring. It can get a bit quiet during the weekdays, but nothing unbearable. As mentioned numerous times here, you can't sit around and expect things to come to you. You have to make an effort to find things. I've been to a house party, a house frat party, kickbacks, played volleyball, basketball, and gamecube, and much more. It all depends on how much effort you're willing to put in.

I started as a freshman a few weeks ago and I can tell you it is definitely not boring. I concede though, you have to be active in seeking out the social scene for yourself. There are plenty of people, including some of my suitemates, that do nothing except study, play videogames, eat, and sleep. I try to avoid these people. If you're looking to party there is no frat row but there are plenty of frats and sororities and thus plenty of frat parties, both at houses in the SD area and at clubs. In addition, between frat parties, house parties, SDSU(if you want to go there), and TJ(Tiajuana) there's always a party going on.

If you're not into the party scene, theres soooo much stuff to do here I've had to restrain myself from trying to do everything. There's hundreds of clubs, IM sports, Club sports if you're more serious, the beach, and countless other stuff. I'm taking 17 units as a freshman, plus a 0 unit seminar, which is a pretty hefty load, yet if you manage your time efficiently the workload is not so bad that you can join clubs, play sports, meet people, and party and still have adequate time to sleep. UCSD is a very laid back school, everybody is always open to meeting new people. I've met so many of my friends just by walking into random suites and introducing myself, and through other random means.

That being said, having a car is useful, although certainly not required.

Overall, I love UCSD. All it needs to be the perfect school is a football team and a frat row.
