My friend wants to major in sociology because he thinks that the sociology major is much easier than economics. He told me that he would rather get a higher gpa and major in sociology than get a lower gpa if he were in economics. He said that with a higher GPA, it is much easier to get into graduate school for a MBA. I told him i remembered reading somewhere on this website that said graduate schools don't look kindly upon sociology majors and only a few get in. Can someone clarify this for me so I can go tell my friend because i dont want him to think that he will get into graduate school just because he has a higher GPA.

Work experience is going to be his most important factor. GPA, Major, etc those all take a step behind it.

That is true - GPA's are only a minor consideration when you're talking about B-school. I've known plenty of people with excellent GPA's get beaten out by those whose GPA's are quite low, but whose work experience and leadership were superior.

That is exactly what i told him and he doesn't believe me. I guess we'll see what happens in 4-6 years! HAR HAR HAR.. But is it true how B-schools don't look too kindly on sociology majors? I'm going to major in communication studies or business economics. HEs going to major in sociology. After work experience and everything who do u guys think will get into the B-school

it's not that b-schools inherently look down upon sociology majors. b-schools accept people from all majors really. it's just that your friend might have a harder time finding a good starting job with his sociology major, and that could be the reason why he might have more trouble getting into a top b-school. GPA is important but not THAT important for b-school. look at the averages. harvard b-school's average admitted GPA is like somewhere around 3.5, which is very low in comparison to other professional programs like law or medicine. work experience counts a lot more. however, you never know what kind of job your friend might be able to draw up with a sociology degree....
