I believe that real success is achieved when you have people by your side who support you in every endeavor. My family is my support system; they are the reason that I push myself each and everyday to make my dreams become a reality. The amount of love and care that my family has put into me has influenced my dream of becoming a doctor. Through my future profession I aspire to not only heal people physically but emotionally and spiritually as well by implementing the values that my family has taught me.
My greatest desire is to finally repay my father for all the sacrifices that he has made for my family and to revive the happiness and ease that he once had. My father immigrated from Afghanistan to America in 1980; seeking a brighter and successful future. After four years of college and adapting to the land of the free, my father graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Sadly, my father lost his job during the recession and hasn’t had a stable job since. I watched as my father struggled to provide for my three brothers and me. Although he had a college degree the lack of job opportunities lead him to work numerous minimum wage jobs to provide for my family. His dreams that had once become a reality were now a distant memory and I witnessed the stress and depression that resulted from that. Watching him struggle not only broke my heart everyday, but it also made me gain a great amount of respect for him. My father introduced me to the concept of being a selfless caretaker. With his hardships he taught me the concept that no job is too small and taking care of family supersedes pride.
I aspire to provide not only myself with a brighter future but my family as well. Financially, growing up was very difficult and ironically that is something that I am thankful for. Living as an underprivileged child, I have learned just how satisfying real success can be. I yearn to be satisfied with everything I do, which is why I put my heart and soul into every endeavor. Recently, I have become more involved with my local hospital. As a volunteer I have become even more passionate about my future goals. At the hospital, I am surrounded by a variety of people and each individual has impacted me drastically. I see many things at the hospital but the one thing that has impacted me the most is how many people are alone. A number of the patients who are near death or sick have no one. I make an extra effort to go sit with the solitary patients to let them know that they are cared for because although my family wasn’t wealthy, I still experienced a rich and fulfilling life because of the generous and compassionate relationship my parents provided me with and I want to try and help the patients to feel the same.
Today I am merely a student who volunteers and tries to positively impact the lives of the individuals around me. But one day I will be more than just a student; with hard work, dedication and the support of my loved ones I know I can solidify my dreams of becoming a doctor into reality.
