I got my rejection letter from Maryland today and I'm curious why.

*i'm not sure if it matters but i sent my application 2 days before the deadline

GPA- 3.8
SAT total - 1810
SAT just math and verbal - 1200
I chose a major in business
I'm taking 4 AP classes this year
I have a lot of extracurriculars including Marching band, latin club, leadership classes, volunteer work, etc
I'm in NHS and in an advanced program in my school
I'm from NY

help? thanks

What is your weighted GPA?

SAT middle 50 for freshmen is between 1250-1400. You are a little low on that regard.

ECs do not seem to matter too much for admission.

The acceptance rate for “regular” admissions is so much lower than the priority deadline of November 1…this is probably the main reason. There are also a LOT of students from NY…they can only take so many OOS students, and your SATs probably contributed.

I hope you have a good plan B. Sorry UMD won’t work for you this time around.

Higher SAT score certainly would of helped, in addition to what astromom said.

The biggest thing that hurt you was not applying priority decision though.

Psh what’s even more ■■■■■■■■ is that I have a 4.0 unweighted I dunno my unweighted because I go to a stupid military boarding school… and I got a 1320 2 part… and I’m in state and I got rejected for prioirty decision… so don’t feel bad.

^^^ haha it blows that was me last year, well I was springed

i did EA and accepted for spring semester… i was pretty shocked lol
my gpa was 4.24, 1980 sat, lots of extracurricular activities (global leadership program in Dominican Republic, math team etc), Spanish honor society, volunteering at two places, internship at animal hospital.

i heard and i think it was reallllllllllllllly competitive this year and i think its getting harder and harder to get in every year

i just think you shud’ve done EA…

The fact is this economy makes it harder and harder to get in. High scoring IS students may be forced to go IS over private, and UMD has a 75/25 ratio.

OOS students love UMDCP, thus if they can afford it they will apply as at least a safety. Again more applicants, for fewer spots.

The fact is UMDCP is notorious for very few acceptances re:RD. You basically are getting in if there were a ton of EA’s that declined very early…higher than they expected statistically.

I think the main reason you didn’t get in was because you were RD. I am IS and I got accepted via priority deadline with lower (not horribly lower) stats.
