The official 2006/2007 CMU academic calendar is here, (most of your questions can be answered by looking at the calendar):

My S comes home during the winter and his break is close to 4 weeks, (mid December to about mid January). He comes home for Spring Break and that is 10 days.

There are not a whole lot of vacations. We get a day off for Labor Day, a 4-day weekend for Thanksgiving, 3 weeks or so for Winter Break, a week for Spring Break, a 4-day weekend for Spring Carnival...and as far as I know, there aren't any other major breaks.

School starts in late August; freshman orientation starts around August 20 or so.

No classes on weekends.

How come TSB December finals are later than the other schools, we have classes during spring carnival, and there's only "Mini-4 Examinations" in the spring?

nevermind, it says that is ony for grad students..
