Can Sophomores get National Merit

My school got PSAT results back yesterday (I go to a public school down in Georgia so these things take a while) and I got a 215 which was high enough to get National Merit last year. Only problem is, I am a Sophomore, so I am not sure if I qualify. However, I am planning on dropping out of high school after my junior year, if that is relevant.

So my question is, will I still be taken into consideration for National Merit?

Also a side question, is it normal for my score to jump up 30 points between freshman and sophomore year? Because when I was taking the test, I felt like it was more difficult than last year, but my score really improved. Maybe the curve was just better?

No, you can’t. Do well junior year.

EDIT - I didn’t see this:

First, do you plan to graduate early? Or actually drop out? If the latter, I’m not sure why you care about this.

If you can actually graduate next year, you may be eligible. What did you mark for your graduation year on your PSAT form?

Take out your PSAT results. Next to your selection index, do you have an asterisk?

no there is no asterisk

And i should have clarified. I’m hoping to do early admission to GA Tech, meaning that I will drop out of high school a year early. After a year there, I hope to transfer to Stanford which my sister says should be easier than directly applying.

 1. Your sister is wrong. “Stanford’s transfer acceptance rate hovers around 1.5% - about 20 transfer students per year.” - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/10738232-post314.html

GT is a very, very good tech school if that’s what interests you.

I’m not 100% sure how this program is regarded, but you may be eligible. Not having the asterisk is a good sign. You might want to call NMSC and ask them for details.

alright, thanks for the great advice :)

do you know what the general admission rate is for stanford by any chance?

because i really wanted to go there, but i really don’t want to get my hopes up, so im still deciding on my plan for high school/college

oh well, i still have 2 years

I’m not trying to discourage you if you are actually interested in GT, but using it as a stepping stone to Stanford isn’t a smart idea.

If you plan on finishing high school after junior year, I believe you do qualify for national merit during sophomore year.
