Can the income tax be greater than AGI?

My parents are married, living in the same house. They did move, so they just bought a house worth $250k.

Since they moved (2 hrs away) my sister and I stayed in the same town to finish senior year. Luckily, he didn’t end up renting an apartment. We are living with our uncle. He hasn’t done my sister’s FAFSA yet, I guess mine is the trial run. We’re doing mine now because Tulane requires EA applicants to file by Dec 15.

OP and dad need to be following the FAFSA instructions. It tells you which line of the taxes to put on which line. You can do that even if not using the DRT.

@twoinanddone he’s filling it out himself. I wish I were there to see if he’s doing what the instructions say…I myself am wondering why what he’s putting in is so off when the FAFSA literally says what lines he should be looking at.

I meant to say that I thought of a situation where income tax can be more than AGI. (When a business loss or NOL carryover causes negative AGI but the income tax consists of Alternative Minimum Tax).

Ok, we don’t have a business. I think he made a mistake, so I told him about it

Also, for the student section, I think he thought that was talking about him. He put me as “Head of the Household”, which I am not. I didn’t not file taxes in 2015, as I made only a couple houndres dollars during the summer. Since I don’t have an income (and no savings, no money), shouldn’t all the information under the student section be $0?

Your dad isn’t “head of household” either.

Your dad must file as either Married Filing Separately or Married Filing Jointly.

Some married people are playing games and trying to EACH file as head of household and that is wrong and gets caught.

I’m just so confused…I’m not really sure what to do except tell my dad to read the directions. I’m not really sure he’s doing that, and I’m worried he’s inputting information wrong. I don’t like with them at the moment, so I can’t really assist. Besides, it’s not like I know anything about taxes. It’s just that I’m prone to research what things mean while my dad just assumes and puts in whatever.

I’m also surprised because they make a lot more than I thought they did, considering how much they complain about money…but anyways I know a lot of my dad’s confusion is because he and my mom have always filed their taxes separately since immigrating here 10 years ago.

Will you all get together for Christmas? Maybe you can sit down together and work on this then.?

@mommdc yes, that’s what I’m thinking. I will email Tulane to ask if the Dec 15 financial aid deadline for EA applicants is strict or if I can submit it later

Yes. Ask Tulane.

Your dad and you will have to sign the FAFSA with each of your FSA IDs to submit.

If your dad filed the tax return incorrectly as “head of household” then he will have to go back and amend it.
He needs go talk to a tax professional.
