For the past 3 years, I have been working at the buck institute, a leading aging research facility. The buck institute recently got recognized as one of the best research insitutions in the US. My name has been published in 2 scientific journals (not any of the big ones) and a 3rd (this time in nature, a pretty prestigious one) is under review. The local paper has written two stories about my work.
question: can this be considered an “ivy quality” hook?

Write the hook as being your deep interest in research and intention to pursue it. The work at Buck Inst, the publications, and the newspaper articles are evidence of your deep interest and accomplishments.

Were your first two publications in relatively respectable journals in the field (i.e. perhaps the second or third tier behind science, nature, cell, et al)? Should you be published in Nature, that would undoubtedly be an ivy-level hook.

the first and second were both in biochem. My name was at the end of the list. (That means I did the least work) The paper for nature is under review. I am not sure if it will be approved.

mainly bio research. My lab utilizes yeast cell-based molecular methods to examine protein interactions that are important in neurodegenerative disorders, such as Huntingtons disease. The ultimate goal of the Hughes lab is to use the biochemical tools available in yeast to identify and develop novel therapeutic compounds that will modulate key protein interactions involved with neurodegeneration.
