Can too many recommendation letters harm your application?

I know many people suggest submitting only two letters, but if the university accepts up to four letters from teachers, will submitting the maximum of four hurt my chances of getting in?

I would stick with 2 unless they only want 1. I wouldn’t submit more than 2

I think that, under normal circumstances, it looks a bit desperate.

I would stick with 2.

Yes. The thicker the file, the thicker the kid, as the old adage goes. A third teacher rec is unlikely to add any new insight from the first 2. The onlt time an exra rec makes sense, and then it’s only if the college allows the extra rec, is if it comes from someone ho can add a different perspective - the orchestra leader, your boss, etc.

lol, I did not know this adage.

If letter 1 says “John is great” and letter 2 says “John is great” and letter 3 says the same thing, what additional info are they getting? or just more reading?

I would only add a third (or fourth) recommender if they really have something different to say about you.
So if Letters 1 and 2 talk about how you are a great student, but letter 3 is from the band teacher and talks about how you volunteered to clean all the tubas and are the first to get there and the last to leave, that gives a different aspect of your personality.
