Can transfer students switch majors at UCSB?

Hello everyone!

I recently found out that I had been admitted into the Econ and Accounting pre-major at UCSB! I am extremely excited! Anyway, the reason I am here is because I have a few questions regarding UCSB's policies for transfer students.

I understand that in order to get into the full major I must complete a couple more classes at Santa Barbara. I have heard horror stories about Econ 10A. From what I've gathered, I would need to get atleast a B in that class to meet the requirements for that major. So here's my first question: let's say I'm unable to get that coveted B, would I then be able to switch my major to something else, or would that just mean i won't be able to graduate from UCSB? I have heard that some UCs are very strict when it comes to transfer students trying to switch majors. What is UCSBs policy regarding this?

My second queston is that, if we are allowed to switch, how difficult is it to get into their geology major? I have heard the UCSBs earth sciences are very good. I've also taken a great interest in that field, and believe both majors are part of the College of Letters and Sciences. Would I be able to switch to that major after completeing the premajor courses that are listed on assist?

UCSB’s College of Letters and Science is quite flexible with students changing majors or even adding a double major or a minor. Econ 10A is a course that should be taken very seriously, as it is usually the primary determinant of whether or not a student will be able to move into the full major. If you receive a “B” you are in or if you receive a “B-” you can conditionally move into the full major. Students that do not meet the major requirement are required to choose a new major. They are not kicked out of UCSB. So if Econ doesn’t work out for you, you can certainly switch to Geology and pursue that major. Hopefully if you are a California Community College you will be IGETC or partial IGETC certified prior to transfer, as that will make switching majors and graduating on time much easier, as you won’t have to worry about general education at UCSB.

Awesome! Thanks UCSBanswers! I appreciate the prompt response.
