So, if I got admitted to some schools, and I have 4K right now and can increase my scholarship money to 10K

which will cover about 1/2 the costs

can I apply for aid even without FAFS?

this is for UCs

If you are a US citizen or eligible non citizen you have to complete FAFSA to apply for financial aid. You will not be considered for aid otherwise.

If you are not eligible for FAFSA you would have to ask the school(s) what aid application is required for international applicants. You would not be eligible for any federal aid of course.

You have probably missed the priority deadlines for aid though.

If you are looking for need based aid as an international, the UC’s are a bad choice. While you could ask private colleges for aid, UC’s have almost no aid for out of state students.

And if you are not an in state student, UC’s cost about $45,000/yr.

Yes. You can apply for anything whenever you want to. Whether you will get anything is a totally different question.

Some schools will grant merit aid without FAFSA. Those you can apply and may get. Some schools require the CSS rather than the FAFSA. If you wouldn’t qualify for Federal Aid, they may waive the FAFSA.

Another big issues is whether it is too late to apply for aid.

^ I’m talking about UCs

I know some UCs, like UCLA, Cal and UCI help u out with financing via loans and such

Please let us know which schools require CSS RATHER than the FAFSA. To my knowledge…every school requiring the CSS Profile for instititutional aid also requires the FAFSA for federal aid. They require the FAFSA also…so that they can determine if a student is eligible for federal funds BEFORE they dispense their own institutional funds.

If there are schools requiring ONLY the Profile, I’d love to see a list.

Yes…some schools award merit aid without completing any financial aid forms.
