Can UCLA undergraduates take classes at UCLA extension?

Quick question - I want to learn a language and since I am already doing a double major, I don't want to take classes at UCLA because I don't want to have to "intensively" study for the language class nor do I want it to negatively affect my GPA.

I was wondering if UCLA undergraduates can take classes at UCLA Extension (on campus or in Westwood) WITHOUT the grades or courses being on their UCLA transcripts?

Also, if any of you have taken courses at UCLA Extension - how was your experience?

Lastly, do current students get any sort of discount? From what I heard UCLA staff only pay 25% - so yeah!

Here's a link to the course I want to take:

Do let me know if you guys know of any better resources to learn Chinese too. Thanks! :)

bumpnyan nyan nyan.

yes, but the course numbering will be different on the transcript, and basically no one does it that way unless you’re not a regularly registered UCLA student.

Yes, you can. My major actually requires us to take a few classes through extension. I’m pretty sure you receive a separate transcript, your grade will not be factored into your UCLA GPA. Another annoying thing is that the class does not count for units, so on paper next quarter I’m only a part-time student, even though I’m taking a full load. Some of my classmates are having to take an extra class for financial aid reasons even though they don’t need it.

That being said, I don’t really know why you would take an extension class if you didn’t have to. You could always take your language classes at UCLA as pass/no pass. (:

Thanks UclaColumbia and Kiley (cute username BTW!) :)

The problem is - I’m a double majoring engineer and I’m maxing out to 20-21 units every quarter (to try and graduate before the end of civilization!) It’ll be a hassle to get the school of engineering to allow me to take 26 units. Also, not that I’m planning on not studying for my extension language courses, but I want to have that “safety net” that even if I fail my class, I won’t get an F or a NP on my transcript.

@Kiley: Since you said you’re taking classes at UCLA Extension, let me now bombard you with questions! :stuck_out_tongue:

 1. Do we, as undergraduates, get some sort of discount (check the link above)?
 2. So basically, my academic record as a UCLA undergraduate will be completely unaffected unless I try to transfer credit. Did I get it right?
 3. How’s the quality of teaching?

Thanks!

Haha, I’ll try and answer the best I can!

1) I know I payed a reduced rate (about $400 each) for my classes (anatomy last quarter, and physiology this quarter). I’m not sure if this was discounted because I’m a UCLA student, or if my department worked something out with extension because we are required to take it through them or over the summer (can you tell I’m annoyed by this? haha). Hopefully it’s because I was a student, so you can get it too! I’m not entirely sure though, because I was in a different type of situation.

2) Yes. (:

3) I’ve only taken one extension course so far, and it was good! We got to work with cadavers (sooo awesome) and the professor presented the info very clearly. My physiology professor is actually the same one I had for LS2 through UCLA last quarter. So my experience has been positive, but I’m sure it depends on the class/department.

Sorry I couldn’t answer your first question, but I’m sure if you call them they would be able to give you a more exact answer. (:
