Can UC's see to where you've applied within the UC system?

Ex. Can Berkeley see if you've applied to UCLA?

Yes.

But so what?

question whtat exactly is a UC?

UC = U Cali

I'm just of the mentality that applying to both Cal and UCLA might hurt your chances at one or the other. I really want Cal, but I need UCLA as a backup. is applying to 3 reach, 2 match (maybe 3 with UCLA) and 1 safety (UCSD, DO NOT WANT TO GO)

Whoamg, the UCs are a public school system, not a private school. Unlike at many private schools they don't have "feelings." They don't care what other schools in and out of the system are, they don't care if you are using the system as a backup, they don't care if you are using specific campuses in the system as a backup, they don't care if you have displayed absolutely no interest in the school at all. They just don't care about all that silly stuff that a lot of privates seem to like.

Btw, you must have mighty fine statistics to be able to call UCLA a backup and UCSD a safety.....

ELC, 4.0 uw, 4730/4800 SAT total. UCSD should be 100%.

It has no fact on each college's decision. There's a check-box on UC app that lets you apply to all UC campuses if you wish. So it is common ppl apply to lots of UC's. Given such why wouldn't they apply to the top campuses? Not a factor.
