Can UCSD be considered a "safety"?

Well, I’m glad I’ve found it, from UCLA forum. Here it is, post #52

Well, technically it is, but I’d apply to a couple lower UC’s just in case. It only takes a click of the mouse to send your application to UCR and the like, and that pretty much takes any doubt out of the equation. Best of luck!

I found out he was accepted to other UCs but not to Mechanical engineering, this post he posted yesterday.

I am picking a nit, but UCSD accepts into the different colleges rather than by major. They kind of plan that students will change majors. So OP doesn’t need to worry about having less of a chance declaring one major over another.

OP, I think you have a very good chance. I guess the message from these boards is, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, and have a couple of safeties.

I don’t think USC considers legacy.

One of the things that can make the UC reject an applicant regardless of GPA and test scores is A-G subject requirement. If a HS student does not take all the required A-G subjects then he/she will be automatically rejected.

I don’t believe a single thing posted by the applicant mentioned by the link in post #22. He said he was rejected by all UCs first then changed story later.

I read it as “64% of those who were admitted are from California”, not that the acceptance rate for Californians is 64%. Big difference.

^ Your are right. My bad wording.

But it does not mean admittance to UCSD and other campuses is totally a crapshoot.

See more about Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) Program here.

I have to say that, with the posted stats, the OP’s chances are very, very good, but he might want to add at least one more UC (or SDSU/SJSU) as an absolute safety. I also think it aids sleep and digestion to apply to at least one safety or low match that will notify you by November or December.

Smattering of 2014 admit rates (incl. UCSD)…

@i012575‌ thanks for the list.

@woogzmama‌ Would UCSC be an absolute safety?

^Interesting to see the in-state vs. out-of-state acceptance differences. After hearing about the OOS horror stories at UNC, UVA, U Mich, and UT Austin, I wasn’t expecting to see the (in some cases) big jumps in acceptance rates for OOS applicants.

@ocean321 - I think UC Riverside has some sort of guaranteed admission program for high-stat CA residents, with early notification, which would qualify as an “absolute safety,” but I think UCSC probably can count as a safety. I reiterate my suggestion that you find some schools with either rolling admissions or non-binding early action Your stats are excellent, and you will probably get into UCSD, but it’s nice to have safeties that notify you long before the regular decision dates.

UCR’s GAP (Guaranteed Admission Program) application deadline was July 15 I believe. You can check this link if you are interested and double check the deadline: <a href=“New Students | Apply | Undergraduate Admissions | UC Riverside”>https://vcsaweb.ucr.edu/gap/index.aspx

With your stats, I think UCSD will be your match and UCSC can be your safety. Don’t you qualify to California Regents?

No, the deadline is July 31.

@artloversplus‌ Thanks! I looked into Regents because I hadn’t heard of it before, and yes, I qualify.

OP:
What’s your UC GPA weighted capped , weighted uncapped and unweighted? Also how many APs and honors abd hOw many a -g classes compared to your class mates. UC acceptance is actually very predictable compared to elite privates.

@2018dad My capped is a 4.33 and my uncapped is 4.83 (if I did the calculations right). UW is 4.0 (straight As)

I have all of the a-g classes requirements except the 4th year of english which I’m taking next year.
Took all honors sophomore year except english, took all honors/AP junior year except english.

How easy is it to change majors at the top UC schools? I can’t imagine any school prohibiting students from changing their minds at that age.

(Not that you would not be changing your mind per se… but you’d get into UCSD as, say, an English major… do well in your Gen Eds for a year… and then change to CS.)
