Can udergraduate loans be deferred while in grad school?

My son is going to grad school in the fall and has about 19K in undergrad federal loans. Can these be deferred while he is in grad school and has no source of income. Also, can a Parent plus undergrad loan be deferred while the student is in grad school?

Thanks

Yes. Your sons undergrad loans will be deferred while he is in grad school. Make sure he completes the paperwork for deferral.

Can I ever postpone making loan
Your son can defer his Direct and Perkins loans while in grad school. You are not so eligible. The conditions under which YOU can defer payments on PLUS are:

"Yes, under some conditions you may receive
a deferment or forbearance that allows you to
temporarily stop or lower your payments.
For example, you may qualify for a deferment under
the following conditions:

You (not your child) return to school at least
half-time at a school that’s eligible to participate
in ED’s federal student aid programs.

Your child, for whom the loan was borrowed, is
enrolled at least half-time (and for an additional
six months after that student is no longer
enrolled at least half-time).

You (not your child) are studying full-time in a
graduate fellowship program.

You (not your child) are in an approved full-
time disability rehabilitation program.

You are unemployed or meet our rules for
economic hardship. (Deferment is limited in
this case up to three years.)
You may also be eligible for a deferment based on
qualifying active duty service in the U.S. armed
forces or National Guard. Refer to the Master
Promissory Note (MPN) for your loan or contact your
loan servicer for more information about specific
qualifications for deferment based on military service.
If you don’t qualify for a deferment but are
temporarily unable to make loan payments for such
reasons as illness or financial hardship, your loan
servicer may grant you loan forbearance.
We charge interest on Direct PLUS Loans during all
periods of deferment and forbearance. "

So, if YOU go to graduate school, you can defer, but for your student. The Half time status is for ug programs. Do be aware that the interest is accruing all of the time you and your student are deferring these loans, most of the time.

can a Parent plus undergrad loan be deferred while the student is in grad school?
<<<

were these taken with the idea that the student would pay them back?

Partially, I paid back three years of undergrad already, he is to pay one year(which is what is outstanding). So from what I understand if my son is in grad school full time for the next two years, the parent plus taken out in my name cannot be deferred?

“Contact your loan holder immediately to check on a possible deferment or forbearance.”

My understanding from what I have read is that the loans cannot be deferred simply because the student is in grad school, but if YOU were in grad school, they could be. It does not mean that the loans cannot be deferred for a number of other reasons. There is a whole list of reasons you can get deferment or forbearance, but just the fact that your student is in grad school is not a permitted reason. You have to pick a reason from the list and that isn’t one of them, but there might be a reason on there that allows you to do so.

Cpte…your post is confusing to me. Loans are deferred because the STUDENT is in grad school.

But the same rules apply. The student must be full time in grad school.

My son had direct loans. They were deferred while he was in grad school.

DD’s loans were deferred while she was in the Peace Corps.

The STUDENT’s Direct Loans can be deferred while that student is in grad school. But the parent’s Direct Loanss, PLUS loans on behalf of a student are not deferrable simply because the student is in grad school, though if the parent goes to grad school, s/he can defer them for that reason. Two different questions the OP is asking and I am only answering the part about the PLUS loans. They cannot be deferred just because the student is in grad school–the parent still has to pay them unless the parent has some other reason to request a deferment.

By the same token, a student cannot defer his student loans if his parent goes to grad school.

Ok, so the loans in the students name(federal student loans, sub and unsub) can be deferred. A Plus loan in the parents name cannot except for the reasons listed(which do not apply to me). So if my son applies for a federal grad school loan(limit is about 20K), do is undergrad loans automatically go into deference?

It will not be automatic. He will need to apply for the deferment.

He nenes to apply for deferment of his undergrad loans, and he will be asked to tell where he is attending grad school more than half time.

Yes, they can be deferred.

Thanks for all the advice!
