Compton finalist here. I actually don’t know if I’m going to fly out for the interview, though - I don’t really have that much interest in going to WUSTL, and my family is low enough income that full tuition wouldn’t reduce the cost very much.

Copied and pasted from another thread, with appropriate changes:

Stats:

* SAT: 2280 (800 CR, 770 M, 710 W)

 • SAT II: 800 Math 2, 800 Physics, 800 Chemistry, 750 US History, 540 Japanese (shouldn’t have attempted this . . .)
 • GPA: I’m homeschooled. For my independent study classes, my parents basically grade me (they gave me all A’s). I’ve also taken a LOT of college classes and gotten all A’s in those.
 • Rank: 1 out of 1 . . .
 • Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): A lot of math competitions. Best AMC series: AMC 12 130.5, AIME 9, USAMO 11

Subjective

* Essays: Sort of weird and not well edited, but conveyed my passion for math well.

 • Teacher Recs: One from math team coach - excellent. One from Mathcamp instructor - probably excellent
 • Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Homeschooled? I’m not sure what influence that has.

Personal

* Location: Maryland

 • High School Type: Homeschooled
 • Ethnicity: White
 • Gender: Male

Other

* Extracurriculars: Few. Mainly a ton of involvement with my homeschoolers’ math club and math team, general extracurricular math, and then I listed a few interests, like politics and reading.

 • Awards: Math competition stuff - USAMO Qualifier, Tiebreakers at ARML, first tier Mandelbrot . . .

First congrats as you must be very book smart to be a finalist for the compton.

What is the race distribution of the Ervin scholarship? I’m worried that I’m at a disadvantage since I’m a white male, and Ervin was only opened up to other races 4 years ago.

The Ervin is a great program. The first class open to everyone is graduating this year. It is a good mix, the "Scholars are great people and it has a fantastic program with great peer and staff support. Of all the “Scholars” programs, the Ervin seemd to have the tightest bonding between the students in the program. I don’t believe that you will feel any “disadvantage”, but instead will make friends for life. But, you will be the best judge of that when you meet the other Ervin finalists at Scholars weekend.

Sorry, I meant at a disadvantage to receiving the full tuition scholarship. I’m perfectly fine with whatever racial distribution occurs within the community, really.
