I’m not familiar at all with this stuff because I’m only an incoming freshwoman, but what’s the deal with waitlisting people when there’s space available in the class?

Typically getting what you reeeeally want won't be a big problem since the seniors, juniors and sophomore will have only picked their first 10.5 units as well. Just FYI, current students are picking classes now and will continue to do so until the 29th of April.

They'll go over in detail which classes to pick when during CalSO, so don't sweat it.

If you can't attend CalSO, there are provisions for you to sign up, but it's something of an ordeal and you basically pick your classes after everyone is done signing up for their first 10.5 units (also known as Phase I). Check the website for more info.

Unit cap, if I'm not mistaken, is 22.5 or something around that. An ideal workload is 15 units per semester...don't try to be a big shot and try to take massive amounts of units your first semester. You think you're hot stuff, but this ain't high school.

CalSO is short for Cal Student Orientation. Basically, you get to get acquainted with the campus, learn where the important things are, and figure out how to best plot out the next four years of your life.

And yes, Phase II is when you sign up for the rest of your classes.
