can we request roomies?!

I know alot of people find their roomates ahead of time on facebook and so forth...does that apply for UVA? Can we request a roomie ahead of time?

This is a BAD idea. Random is the way to go.

You can request a friend from high school or someone you meet on facebook to be your roommate and they will put you together as long as the request is mutual.

I would suggest random, though. There is always the chance that you might not get along, but honestly that seems to be very rare. UVA seems to do a good job of matching up compatible people based on the survey you fill out.

I went random, and so did most of my hall. It exposes you to a wider variety of people and also makes sure you won’t have a crutch of sorts when you come in. I’m not BFFs with my roommate but we get along really well! We watch all the same TV shows so we do that together and hang out on occasion, but we don’t spend every waking moment together. It’s also less pressure to live with someone that isn’t your best friend in the case of a disagreement or something.

That’s just my opinion though! :)

Don’t do it. I found my roommate on facebook and I really hate him. No joke haha.

My D met her roommate last spring at DOTL. They got to talking and discovered they had a ton in common. They communicated over the summer, coordinated their room, etc. They’re both OOS but live across the country from one another. They are extremely good friends and have never had any problems – not even a little squabble. They’ll be living off grounds next year together in an apartment. You simply never know; sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Students used the class Facebook page to create a housing survey last year and I think some found roommates that way. The housing office’s survey works, but the one the students created on Facebook went into a lot of depth!
