For those admits from the south and west, coming from moderate weather, how does everyone feel about the snow, rain and temperature second semester?
Today is not a good day to ask this question. We just got hit by another snow storm.
That’s crazy Michigan weather… I have lived here my entire life and I’m still always taken by surprise when we have these crazy switch days (hot one day, cold the next)!
My son is a freshman from Georgia. He has never mentioned the weather as being an issue. He purchased a proper coat and shoes and feels that the campus is small enough that it hasn’t really impacted his experience. He lives on central campus so that helps.
I have many Californian friends here at Michigan and the weather did take a bit of getting used to for them, but honestly I think it is better for them because its a novelty. They get really excited about the snow. As long as your coat is warm enough you’re good, though it’s a bit sad that in the middle of winter no one wants to go outside.
It’s unfortunate that there are so many great schools in the North and NE but the weather is so brutal during the late fall, winter and early spring that qualified students will choose to go elsewhere. For example, D is a very good student but will not apply to these schools even if a good fit because she doesn’t want to deal with sub freezing weather and snow for 6 months out of the year and/or won’t want to set roots in those cities once she graduates. Anyone else’s kids have these same concerns?
Yes @Socaldad2002 my S did not apply anywhere cold. I agree the north loses some great students! Not sure all can really tough it out!
I am sure region is one data point for kids after curriculum, finances, size etc. 4 seasons of weather is not for everyone.
I was there in February, President’s Day weekend, with my son as an admitted student. I was prepared with thermal underwear, heavy parka etc. By the way, I am in NYC. It was cold that week there. My sons didn’t complain but I thought it was cold. Anytime I was outside, I was looking forward to when I will be inside. Ann Arbor is impressive college town. I would have liked to walk around and see more. Anyway, my son didn’t choose that school not for the cold but he felt he is a better fit in another.
We are from Dallas, and my D is in the middle of her second semester in AA. Before she went she did not like cold weather at all, but fell in love with the town and school. Spent $$ on a good coat (in December she purchased in AA) and boots. She has not complained once about the weather, event though it is cold for a very long time. They call it “Winter Term” for a reason. Learn to layer, and don’t buy a lot at home, and let them learn what they really need.
