Guidance counselor at the school my daughter attended in NYC last year told us that admissions chances were made unpredictable by schools that suddenly became "hot" in a given year --so suddenly a place that past experience would suggest you were qualified for became out of reach by the increased competition. She said there was no way to see this coming in advance.

Do you think CC can give us some insight here?

Kenyon is increasing in popularity as well. Carleton is another school that is becomming "hotter." Furman U. in North Carolina also seems to be gaining in popularity. I think it's highly likely that more schools in the mid-west and south will become "hot" in the next year or two because competition for slots in the northeastern LACs is becomming so intense. Market pressures will move folks towards other good "admissions values" as Mini likes to say.

A good number of Patriot League Schools-Colgate, Holy Cross, Bucknell -all offer a great combination of academics and social life. At the reach level, Duke continues to be very hot-fantastic campus(realize Duke is not a LAC). Believe Holy Cross will continue to raise its profile due to a large capital campaign-already raised $150 million wiyh a year and a half left. Also for those students who want to be close to BOSTON only all female Wellesley is closer.

Davidson seems to be a really hot school at my high school. I think its probably because of all of the stuff they sent to at least people I know, just like Wash U.
