Can you actually use "I" in your essay on the AP English Exam?

I just read CliffAP and on one of "High scoring essay", the essay used pronouns like "I" and "we" is that really allowed?

“I” and “we” are used when telling a personal account. Personal accounts are written to support the thesis.

In my previous English Classes, I am never allow to use “I” in any formal writing even if it is a personal writing. Looking back, I don’t even know how I passed the course…(it was grade 8)

In middle school, you learn to absolutely never use I for the same reason as you learn to absolutely always write an essay consisting of exactly 5 paragraphs. If you tell the average 8th grader that they may sometimes use “I”, you will get papers that read like “I think this and I don’t think that because in my research I have found these facts”.

Haha, my AP Lit teacher would probably tear that person’s hair out. And then flunk him. Usually (aka 99.8% of the time) first person does not make a good essay for the reason in the previous post.

I was a complete rebel on the essays because I was feeling really angsty after a breakup the night before (lol).
so yeah, I used personal pronouns all over the place, even in the rhetorical analysis, and I got a 5
but i’m pretty sure i got all the mult choice right, so take that personal anecdote with a grain of salt.
I don’t recommend doing it; there’s rarely a need for it.
