Can you apply as undecided and then decide to major in theater arts?

Hi, I'm an international student and I plan to apply to fordham as undecided. So, I was wondering if I could later, when i decide what to major in, choose theater arts as a major, could I do that, is it hard? I've heard that changing to a major in performing arts is difficult at colleges.

You’ve heard correctly. Majoring in Theatre requires an audition and the program begins immediately…1st semester courses are Acting I and Collaboration I. It is a competitive admissions process with about a 10% acceptance rate. It may be possible to audition for the program at the end of freshman year but it is even harder to get in then. You will also be behind in the major and might not graduate in 4 years.

If you think it is at all a possibility that you would like to major in Theatre, I recommend that you apply as a Theatre major and go through the admissions/audition process as an incoming freshman. It is MUCH easier to change your major by switching out of the Theatre department then it is trying to get in later. Additionally, if you are not accepted into the Theatre major, you still might be accepted into Fordham and you could choose to reaudition at the end of freshman year or you might simply minor in Theatre which does not require an audition. Mainstage productions are open to majors AND minors.

FYI, Theatre majors are required to live at LC as that is where the department is located. It may be possible, I’m not entirely sure though, to live at RH as a theatre minor but all theatre classes would be at LC.

Good luck or rather, Break a Leg! :)

Thank yous so much. I’m not sure about applying to the theater department, because I have no experience, but I think I might try  thanks so much again for your reply!

If you have no experience, you should consider adding non-audition BA theatre programs to your college list. This is the type of program where you can usually just declare Theatre as your major. You’ll still have to audition to be cast in productions though.

Honestly, I also think you need to reflect on why you might want to major in it if you have no experience. How do you know that you’ll even like performing or be any good at it?

Now I’m not saying that you couldn’t possibly be a performer if you haven’t already started. But you should try it out. Start auditioning for local productions and if you aren’t cast, volunteer backstage or as an usher or something that gets you involved in the theatre. You could do the same once you get into college, even at Fordham. You don’t have to major in theatre to be involved in it as an extracurricular activity. In fact, I believe that RH has several theatre groups and they aren’t even open to Theatre majors. It’s only the Fordham mainstage productions in which you must be a Theatre major or minor to participate.

If you do decide to apply to Fordham as a Theatre major, make sure you are prepared for your audition!
