Can you Apply Early Decision to Penn and Early Action (Non-restrictive) elsewhere?

I'm not sure if this exact question has been asked already, but I was wondering if one could apply to the University of Pennsylvania or Northwestern for Early Decision (Binding) while simultaneously applying Early Action to say University of Chicago, MIT and/or Caltech.
I know the point of ED is to show that you are most interested in that specific school, so if it is in fact possible to apply to EA and ED, would it have a negative impact to apply to all?

Thanks for the help.

It’s a moot point; if you apply to Penn or Northwestern ED, and are accepted ED, you are required to withdraw your other applications.

I think you can. What if you don’t get in to your ED choice? or get deferred to RD? By the time you hear from your ED school, it would be too late to apply to your EA school. If the schools have no restrictions against it, you need to cover your bases.

If you do get in to your ED school you just withdraw your other applications.

IMHO, only one binding ED, and as many EA as you want. EA is not binding, and as long as the ED is your top choice, there should not be an issue.

I thought the note about double depositing was interesting - unethical unless one college requires a deposit to stay on their waiting list.
