I want to apply ED to Brown, and EA to a bunch of places....crazy? legal?

please let me know what you think!

Not crazy. Illegal.

Each school has their own supposed policies, but most schools will say that you can ED only to one school ORR EA to several schools. Can't have both. Some schools like Stanford and Yale even say you can only EA to their school (SCEA - single choice early action).

Neither crazy nor illegal for most schools. The ones that have specific rules spell them out; otherwise, you can apply ED to one school and EA to others.

Brown, however, does have a restriction:

Early Decision is reserved for applicants who have not applied to any other Early Decision or Early Action programs.

Brown Admission: Regular & Early Decision

So to answer your specific question, no, you cannot apply to Brown ED and other schools EA.

Most schools allow you to apply ED to theirs and EA to others, it is just if you get in ED to theirs, you have to go there

I applied ED to Penn and EA to Chicago. I got into both places, I am currently at Penn and Chicago didn't make a big stink about it either. You just have to look at the rules. Brown, Princeton (back in the day) and other schools have ED programs where you cannot apply EA anywhere. Places like Stanford and Yale have SCEA where you cannot apply EA or ED anywhere else. For both of these types of schools it is fine to apply to schools with rolling admission early so you hear back early. It is also fine to meet an earlier deadline that lets you hear back sooner (UMD has something like this if you finish your app by December 1 you hear back a month or two earlier). They will not penalize you for submitting applications early.

There are schools like Georgetown, BC, ND, and others that do EA, let you apply to a million places EA and rolling, but will not let you apply ED anywhere.

The rest of the schools will probably allow you to apply ED and EA as many places as you want (holding only one school for ED).
