I know masters programs are less selective but would it be a bad idea to treat it like a PHd applicant? I know that for PHd's the biggest aspect seems to be about research. Well...in the personal statement I heard it's good to mention your research topic and the professor you're interested in researching with. Can this be done to maximize your acceptance into a masters program? Or are they looking for some things PHd students don't have...like internships or whatnot.

sorry, I didn't mean don't have I meant don't emphasize as I'm sure plenty of PHds have had internships

Treat it like a PhD app. You should do a research thesis in a masters program, plus you will do research within you seminars. When I applied to masters programs, I described the research I am interested in and noted which profs would be helpful in that regard. Also mention prof(s) with whom you've had contact.
