Can you apply just to see if you can get in w/o completed prereq?

I'm almost done with my IGETC, and as for prereq, I am barely starting it. Do UC's keep track of how many times I apply?

I have applied for UCSD out of hs but was rejected.
I am planning to apply again next year even though I don't have my prereq completed. It's too much, and I don't like to stay behind.
Even if I do get rejected next year, do they care if I apply the 3rd time?!
btw, my major is Mechanical Engineering.

UCSD is known for only caring about your GPA assuming that you use TAG, which for next year will be about 3.5. If you can get a TAG, then go for it since you might have a chance.

When you say that you are just starting the pre-reqs, if you haven’t started Calc 1, you are looking at 2 more years before you will be ready to take upper-division mechanics classes. If you’re nearly done with math and all you have left is the physics and chemistry series, along with engineering courses, you are looking a year there and you might as well apply since you will only have a few pre-reqs missing at most.

No, UC’s do not officially have a 3-strikes policy. The only thing I am aware of that will permanently disbar you from them is lying on about your transcripts.

i don’t think they mind because they’ll be getting your $$$!

Of course you can apply, there is no residual effect if you are concerned (applicants are not compared from one year to the next and your previous applications do not affect your current application).

IGETC is nearly worthless for transferring into an engineering program, given how much more important prereqs are according to every UC admissions counselor I’ve spoken with over the past year and a half. And if you’ve only taken part of the calc or physics series, that’s almost worse than nothing; unless you complete the entire series (or however much of it is required and approved on ASSIST), there’s no way for the UC to be sure of what you actually know, or where you stand relative to their series.
