Can you ask any teacher for a recommendation letter?

Am I allowed to ask a teacher I had 1 or 2 years ago for a recommendation letter?

Yes. Junior/senior years are preferred, but if you have some compelling reason to pick a sophomore year teacher, it’s not a terrible thing. Helps if it was a rigorous course and they know you reallly well. If the rec is only average, admissions will question why you didn’t pick a more recent teacher. If it’s great, you’ll be fine.

You can choose junior/senior year teachers. A word of advice- think hard about who you ask. If you are applying with a science based major, ask a math or science teacher. Similarly, if you are applying for humanities, ask a history or english teacher. Try and stick to the core teachers, colleges don’t like it as much when you send in a recommendation from an elective course.
