Can you avoid elevators at Vandy?

Can using elevators be easily avoided at Vanderbilt, even in the science buildings (which, based on pics, seem to be the tallest buildings on campus)? If you are in a taller building and avoiding the elevator, would you be the only one on the stairs, or is it fairly common for students to use the stairs instead of the elevators in those buildings? How about the dorms?

Thanks!

Most of the buildings on campus are not that tall, but the freshman dorms have as many as 7 or eight floors, I think, and some of the upper classmen dorms have many more than that. The buildings in the medical center are fairly tall. As on any campus, you would be getting a workout if you never used an elevator.

I would say it’s very easy to manage without elevators unless you live high up in a dorm.

Is this related to hazing or something? Can’t imagine why else someone would need to avoid elevators.

Outside of dorms, students practically never use elevators.

Funny that Pancaked ^thought hazing, I am assuming a phobia–if that is the case I am sure the school would be more than happy to accommodate you in your housing choice your freshman year if you mention it to them. It seemed to me that the kids in my daughter’s dorm on the Commons were encouraged to use the stairs anyway. After freshman year, you would be able to request your dorm, many of which are only 2-4 floors (and I believe that you can pick which room you want, from those that are available, within the dorm). You are correct that the buildings in Stevenson Center are generally the tallest classroom buildings on campus–would you be majoring in any of the sciences? That could be an issue; for what it’s worth, the lecture halls in those buildings are on the first or underground floors if I recall correctly.

Oh. I guess that would be more rational!

It’s really unlikely you’d have a class high up in Stevenson. The upper floors are mostly for professor/TA offices.

Yep, phobia…and unfortunately yes to the science ( tallest building) too. Is Stevenson the science building? Taking a few flights of stairs isn’t really a big deal, but it mught not feel very safe if the stairs are off the beaten path, or rarely used. Any input on how often students choose to use stairs over elevators in the taller buildings?

It’s definitely not hard to not use elevators at Vandy, especially for freshmen. I don’t think I’ve ever used an elevator in an academic building (very few people do do), and I wouldn’t say it’s weird to use the stairs in any building regardless. The only time when it might be an inconvenience to not use stairs would be if you were living in Towers as an upperclassmen because each Tower is 14 floors. It’s still not “weird” to use the stairs, it would just be tiring for you.
