Can you be successful in the business world without giving your life to it?

I was going to comment that I have been ‘successful’ without putting in extreme hours… My family income is in the top 3-5% in the country, my house is paid for, kids education paid for without debt, faimly is healthy happy, I love my wife and children, I have particpated in their lives, scout volunteeer, band booster prez, etc …

All of that is true, but as an energy geologist… I have often been gone at night to locations, for some days at a time, in the field doign ‘field work’ for a month etc…

I have a wonderful understanding wife, but what I realized is that I didnt view that as a ‘grind’ that was fune work and I liked it, so I didnt midn putting in some extra time…

So keep in midn if you are doing something you like it doesnt seem liek overtime!!

as an aside, with the jobs you mentioned… consider some areas, like public relations, advertising, maybe ‘event management’ have some of the same ideas of staging!

I often wonder how young students pick a major. Lots of risk to doing that but its like your childhood. You probably tried a number of sports, maybe dancing, maybe art and finally chose something you were happy with.

I started in the medical field, did it for a few years. Got married, had a child, took time off and went back to a different field that paid better. Moved a few times from company to company until I found one I liked and I stayed. I completed my degree in an evening program. I worked my way up the corporate ladder to a very comfortable position. Problem is that I had to make choices along the way. When my child was young I did not put in a lot of extra hours. I saw less qualified candidates move past me because they put in more hours and were there to be seen when the bosses worked late. They did not have the business knowledge I had but they were there and had no issues with brown nosing. It caught up with them later in years.

As my daughter grew I could put in more hours. The one thing I made sure of is that I worked hard when I was there and I was committed to doing a great job. Whatever field you choose, do your best and remember the race is not always won by the person that gets to the next level first. Dont be in such a hurry. Opportunities will come along the way and you will have to consider them. Good luck

"If this is the goal and you want 40 hour week, get digree in IT / Computer science - one of the majors in Business school. " If you don’t have talent for IT/computer science, you’ll be spending 24/7 at the office. In business you can make a mistake and people will not even notice it, but there is not such luck in IT.
