Can you buy used furniture from previous last year students?

My wife is flying out with our son this Thurs. He will live in a quad at Vanderbilt. Is there any place where people are selling their old furniture for the common room that we can buy this week?

Probably not; you see more old furniture for the taking or for sale when students move in May.

You could look on the New Haven craigslist.

There are many goodwill stores in neighboring towns with plenty of furniture - Milford (CT) has a good outlet about 5 miles away.

If you must try to buy it from upperclassWOMEN. You don’t want a used couch that was in a guys’ suite. TRUST ME. And even if you see a Yale Coed hawking one, still check it out. We had our girl friends re-sell our dump of a couch when wary freshmen and parents ran away screaming from us. The girls sold it! LOL

I agree with  go OFF CAMPUS and don’t recycle something that’s already spent countless years in some Yale suite.

When I think of the liquids that sank into that couch – brrrrr!!! It gives me the willies to think about it!

Thanks, it sounds like good advise. I’ll pass it on to my wife and son.

BUT! we are not all deceptive, sketchily filthy snake oil salesmen! i (a girl) and a bunch of my friends will probably be looking to unload futons and similar things - it’s a function of moving into a different suite that there is an excess of furniture. if you’re willing to take a risk, there should be really good deals from upperclassmen on campus starting freshmen move in day.

frontwards: thanks for offsetting my (actual) lowdown behavior. Embarrassed: yes. Trying to impart some caution: yes. LOL

And note that I said people SHOULD buy from upperclassWOMEN. I hope you get a good deal on your futons! Enjoy the new semester!

frontwards: My D and roommates will need to buy a sofa/futon, and I’m sure used furniture is definitely a possibility. Will the upperclassmen sellers congregate at a specific place, or will it be hit or miss? Thanks!

people who want to unload things will probably make themselves obvious to everyone moving on to old campus (more so than silliman or TD, though upperclassmen in those colleges probably won’t bother hauling their stuff all the way to the OC.) if last year’s any indication, there will be people on the sidewalks outside, on the green, etc. there will also probably be couches left unattended meant for people to just take, but avoid these; they’re mostly dubious ones (from the boys!)

get advices
