Can you chance me for MIT?

Hey guys. So for years now I’ve probably been keeping my eye on MIT (and other top engineering schools like Caltech and Stanford) and the years keep coming closer and closer to my application deadline and now I’m beginning to think, “Have I really accomplished anything spectacular with my life so far?” And then I realized, “I need someone to tell me if I’ve really done that.” So after reaching this epiphany, I’ve found this site and am now using it to help me gain a better understands at my chances for MIT here.

• AP Computer Science A (taking online)
• AP Calculus BC (taking online)
• Dual Enrollment Calculus 2/3
• AP Human Geography (Taking online)

Clubs:

• Mu Alpha Theta
• Science Honor Society (Science Olympiad, attending this year)
• Physics Club (Physics Olympiad, attending this year)

Academic Achievements:

• Mu Alpha Theta Nationals

o 10th place in Limits and Derivatives

o 9th place mu gemini

• Mathcounts (8th grade)

o 1st in Palm Beach County

o 26th in the state of florida

• 2nd place in PBCCTM Competition

• 17th place in individual at FAU Math day competition, 4th place in team

Extra-Curricular’s:
• played piano for 7 years, have played at nursing homes and churches, have not attended any competitions

• Started playing tennis 1 and a half years ago, started playing under 16 boys USTA matches

• Owner and Creator of I-phone app UCollege (Link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ucol...6350?ls=1&mt=8)

• Did taekwondo for 6 years; I've also attended state and national level taekwondo tournaments and won some medals/trophies

• I tutor students in Pre-Calc/Algebra 2 at my school through Mu Alpha Theta

Future Goals:

• Going to start attending piano competitions and volunteering more through my piano skills.
• I skipped first grade, so by the time I’ll be sending off my college app to colleges I’ll still be 16, so my goal through tennis is to reach the top 200 in under 16 USTA boys standings (So far: 0! )
• I’m going to study harder for the AMC and hopefully make AIME and even make USAMO, which is my goal this year. I did very poor last year (a 108? My twin brother made it to AIME with a 126 but only got a 6 on it, didn’t qualify for USAJMO :P)
• I’m going to take the SAT Math 2 Subject Test in October, hopefully going to get an 800
• I’ve also been given the opportunity in my school to take the PSAT this year, I’m going to try and get 220+ so next year I can qualify for National Merit Scholar.
• Definitely work on my app. For anyone that clicks the app link you’ll probably say “Oh, this is ****, this guy’s not even special.” Well, that may be true, but I’m not a very experienced coder, and with the struggle between my EC’s and school courses, it’s a heavy workload. However, I’m more prepared and ready to work and put more time on my app, my freshman year workload of 3 ap’s really prepared me for today.
• I’ll try to qualify for RSI next summer, would be a huge opportunity for me to learn more about computer science and hopefully get some better ideas on how to improve my app.

I’m very sorry for this super long post, but I just want to make sure to those that read know what kind of person I am and what I’ve already done and prepared to work hard for in the near future in order to get into MIT. I would be very much appreciated to anyone that offers any sort of feedback/constructive criticism: tell me what I need to improve, what I should focus on more in the future, etc.

Thank you to anybody that reads this!

MIT: Reach

Honestly you have a better chance at Harvard for computer engineering than at MIT, Stanford or Caltech… but even that is a reach for anyone. Here are some suggestions:

UIUC: Aim for 32+/2150+
Berkeley: Aim for 32+/2150+
CMU: Aim for 33+/2200+
UMass Amherst: Aim for 26+/1800+

Even though it is pretty early for “chancing”, you definitely accomplished cool things in your freshman year  Try to achieve even more in your sophomore year. And definitely apply to RSI next year. It is an awesome camp. Try to do REALLY good (230+) on your PSAT for RSI.

bump bump bump

Okay… look. You’re in your sophomore year…it’s going to be difficult for anyone to chance you…
We don’t know what your class rank will look like. We don’t know what your GPA is or your SAT… or your SAT IIs. We know pretty much nothing. Even when posters do give us all this information, it’s still very difficult to chance someone because we don’t know what their application looks like. So until you have all this stuff up, you’re not going to get an accurate chance.

Even though you seem like a pretty smart person, it would be very far fetched to say that MIT is even a low reach school for you. We just don’t know enough to make that statement. Telling us that “you’ll try to get x on test y” isn’t accurate enough.

Please don’t double post. It clogs up the forum.

Giving out target scores is the best I could do at this stage…

Catria: Who are you responding to?
:)

Hope you make USAMO.

If you don’t,
Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford: Reach to high reach even with 2350+ and multiple 800s on SAT IIs.

Are you an Asian male?

@20more, yes I’m an Asian Male (technically Indian)

@Truust You have a very good point here. I wasn’t actually trying to get people to chance me, it would seem quite far-fetched even at this stage in the game. What I was really aiming for was whether my accomplishments and my future goals (If I accomplish them) are good to put me at a “high reach” for MIT. You’re also right, if I haven’t taken the tests yet, you cannot really “chance” me, what I was trying to go for was sort of an “evaluation” of my achievements so far.

bump bump bump

@Sean5248 Could you clarify what you are saying? I’m quite lost, you went off on a tangent there…

HYPSM is really a lottery unless you cure cancer. At that point, you have a 5% chance. If you solve fusion power, you’re at a 10% chance. Build a spaceship and go to the moon, and you’re at 15% chance. Build a particle accelerator - 20% chance. Create dark matter - 30% chance. Invent the warp drive - 40% chance. Cure AIDS - 50% chance. Solve world hunger, and you’re now at a 60% chance. You have 2 years - more than enough time to do all this!

In all seriousness, your future goals look fine. Make sure you stick to those goals.

This is a bunch of BS. I have plenty of friends that made HYPSM schools with ~2200, medium income, both Asian and non-Asian, and no international competition wins.As long as colleges see that you love what you do with a passion, you’re fine. The problem with these threads is that they make people think that getting into HYPSM is solely dependent on SAT/SAT II/ACT and competitions like Intel ISEF, Google Science Fair, and USAMO.

While these accolades will certainly help, it is by no means a “high reach” if you don’t have them.

HYPSM are high reach whether you like it or not.

“As long as colleges see that you love what you do with a passion, you’re fine.”
Good luck!
