I have heard of people "wheeling and dealing" with colleges when one college offers more FA than another. Does this also work with state vs private? Such as if a private costs 15-20k, and a state costs perhaps 10k, how likely is the private to bring the cost down? I am going to college next year and have somewhat of an idea on how FA works but I don't know the ins and outs unlike everyone else who went through the admissions process.

Highly unlikley. Keep in mind that goal of your state university system is to provide an affordable choice for their taxpayer base.

If money is going to be an issue, sit with your parents to find out ow much they are willing to pay/borrow for you to go to college. Run your numbers through the net price calculators and then ask your parents again, if you as a family can afford this. Compile a list where you know that you have some affordable choices along with schools that you are a good candidate for merit money
