Can you defer enrollment even though you already placed an enrollment deposit at a different college

I know that you are only allowed to accept one offer at one time(or else you risk getting rescinded at all of the schools), but can you pay an enrollment deposit at one college and then defer enrollment at a different college?

Let’s say I defer enrollment to a college until 2017 but already placed an enrollment deposit at a different college. There are a number of reasons that I want to do this.

  1. Biggest reason is that I am in danger of getting rescinded due to my grades 2nd semester. I can defer enrollment to a less selective college/state flagship just in case. I could just reapply next year if I get rescinded but the problem is that I would be applying with worst stats and I would risk getting rejected. I know that the CommonApp wipes out all its data in the summer so I don’t want to bother my HS Guidance Counselor and teachers to write me another LOR since they might not have saved the one they had written for me before. My Guidance Counselor would also have to upload the school profile again to the commonapp but starting next year my HS will offer more AP classes; so it might hurt me since the school profile would list AP classes that I did not take, thus colleges will think I won’t be taking the most rigorous course load.
  2. I am a senior right now and I’m stuck deciding between several colleges. I need more time to decide.

When you defer enrollment you agree to attend. When you put down a deposit you agree to attend. No. You’re not supposed to do that.

But if you get waitlisted from a college and they pull you out of the waitlist and you accept it in like July, then you would have to pull out from the other college that you already deposited iand agreed to attend in May. So how is this different?

A waitlist acceptance is a known and agreed to exception for all colleges.

And most colleges will rescind you if you’re caught double-depositing. Stop trying to justify double-depositing and pick a school.
