Can you defer undergrad student loan while in grad school?

My undergrad loan is composed of both subsidized and unsubsidzed. I’m in grad school now and I think I can get my payments deferred. Just want to make sure.

I think the subsidized loan will not accrue interest while I’m in grad school, but the unsubsidized will. I got a little extra cash so can I pay only toward the unsubsidized portion for now?

thanks

anyone? don’t tell me it’s all international students here so no one knows what I’m talking about.

You need to find out who your loan servicer is and I think you have to let them know you are in grad school and request a deferment.

When did you graduate from undergrad? Have you gotten any mail about repayment of loans?

some info, like finding out who your loan servicer is.

First of all, in the graduate forum you have to be a little patient - there are fewer posters here and I get the sense that we are online less often than in some of the other forums.

Secondly - yes, you can defer your federal loans while you are in graduate school. I don’t even think you need to find out who your servicer is; when you enroll, your university will submit your enrollment status to the National Student Loan Data Clearinghouse and your servicer should automatically update the information. (I never had to request a deferment when I was in school - it happened automatically.) However, it’s good to know who your servicer is just in case this doesn’t work out.

When I started graduate schools my private loans were deferred automatically through the National Student Loan Data Clearing House, however somehow my Fedloans didn’t get the memo and I had to deal with them directly.
