for example, chicago is ea and cornell is ed. could i apply to both at the same time?

No, I don't think you can.

Oh I thought you could, you just have to withdraw all applications if accepted to the ED school [in this case Cornell]

It depends on the school. Columbia, for example, will let you apply EA (not SC, of course) while you ED.
You'd have to check for individual schools. I couldn't find Cornell's policy, so I would assume ED/EA would be allowed, but I'd still contact them to make sure.

Many ED schools will let you apply somewhere else EA, provided it's not SCEA (duh) and provided that you enroll at the ED school if accepted (duh #2). But for some bizarre reason, many people on these boards (cough, glucose, cough) keep insisting that you can't.

I couldn't find the information on the Cornell site, but Columbia explains:

"According to National Association for College Admissions Counseling guidelines, “while pursuing admission under an Early Decision plan, students may apply to other institutions, but may have only one Early Decision application pending at any time.” While Columbia does not necessarily encourage the filing of both Early Decision (binding) and Early Action (non-binding) applications, we do not prohibit candidates from doing so."

I think the applications are quite clear when it comes to what you can and cannot do and the commitment you are making to a school with a particular submission. If a school doesn't expressly prohibit doing both ED and having an EA application elsewhere (does any place actually do this?), well then, it isn't prohibited.

As far as I know, as of a few years ago Columbia was the only very selective school that had an ED program that did not preclude applying to other schools EA at the same time (provided the applicant was committed to Columbia if accepted ED). All other programs I looked at (including SCEA) expressly forbade EA applications.

There is, however, a universal (I think) exception for rolling-admission applications to state universities that do rolling admissions. And, of course, nothing precludes submitting regular applications to anywhere early.

The national guidelines indicate that the ED/EA combination is the general rule.

For instance, my daughter was able to apply ED to Penn and EA a couple of other places. No problem.

I've certainly read on CC of kids applying ED and EA (non SC) at a variety of colleges, and seen others advising that it is usually allowed.

The only place I can recall where this isn't allowed is Princeton. If you know of any other examples now please share this information, because it is a subject that comes up repeatedly.

I apologize profusely! You are right and I was wrong. With a little research, Princeton, Brown and the SCEA schools are the only ones I found that do not permit other EA applications in conjunction with their ED/EA program.

That's OK ... I've had to eat my words on CC on occasion. No need to apologize!

I didn't know about Brown. Strange, since that is where my daughter ended up after all (but she applied RD).

While Georgetown has EA it does not permit applying ED to other schools with their EA to Gtown as they state:

*In keeping with this principle, students applying under the Early Action program may not apply at the same time to binding Early Decision programs since they then would not be free to choose Georgetown if admitted. Students are welcome to apply to other Early Action programs or other Regular Decision programs while at the same time applying to Georgetown's Early Action program. *

Wow, what a pretentious reason..."would not be free to choose Georgetown if admitted"...

Okay it's not pretentious. The idea of EA or ED is that you are telling the school "you are my first choice" if you accept me I will come. It is a fair exchange, early information and a slightly better shot (In some cases) in exchange for helping them improve their yield.

i applied ED to W&L and EA to Tulane; i just withdrew my app from tulane when i heard positively from W&L.
