Can you do this?

I am wondering, say you have your scheduale set for the semester. Can you just go to a class without actually getting a grade for it? Like just to go and learn a language for example, but get graded on it for anything so it doesn't affect your gpa.

Your transcript will show it if you drop, withdraw, or anything else.

My school has the option to take a course as a "listener" if the prof approves -- you go to class but don't get a grade. See if your school has an option like this.

I don't even want to bother. I am paying for school so you bet I do not want to waist my money away by just listening.

Then go with that. If you know that it will hurt your average gpa, don't let it appear on you transcript.

I know a few people at my school who go to big lecture classrooms with their friends sometimes just to listen to the lecture and not get graded on it.

Taht's not me. We talking about my hard-work money here. No way I am waisting it away.

At my school you can audit a class without receiving credit or having it show up on your transript. You still pay tuition for the class, but if you have a scholarship then it doesn't matter.

You guys are giving me headaches about even considering waisting your money and time away.

if the class is big enough that you wouldnt be noticed, you could certainly get away with going to lectures w/o being "in" the class and getting grades.

This is better. You get the grades.

talk to the professor- most of them wont mind. i know several people who have audited a class.

man what are some of you guys saying - how is going to a class to learn something that you probably enjoy a waste of anything?
Almost no classes take attendance, so you could probably just go sit in on whatever class you want. Other than that, as others have said, some schools have options to take a class without a grade. UCLA has a "Pass/No Pass" option, in which you take the class and all tests, and as long as you get a C or better, you get a "Pass" on your transcript - no letter grade.

Well, and moreover, for many schools once you're taking a certain number of units, it's not going to cost any more to attend more classes.

I mean, if you're already taking 4 classes (or whatever the standard courseload is), how is it a waste of money to take an additional course as a listener? If anything, you're getting more knowledge for the same amount of money.

It's not that at my school.

to be a little more clear i guess: Do not sign up for the class. Just say decide to go and sit. Kind of like being a spectator, but it doesn't show up on the transcript or anything. Pretty much if they don't take attendance I am guessing you can just go and sit right?

Yeah that's definitely how things work at my school. If you don't pay per-credit tuition I'm guessing you can do this. If it's a big lecture class you should be fine just showing up, but if it's a smaller class then obviously it's a good idea to ask the teacher if it's OK for you to sit in on the class.

I know people who go to big lecture halls to learn other subjects without the pressure of a grade. It's not as noticiable in a large lecture hall as it is in a small class of about 30 students.
