Can you get accepted to USC with no AP classes?

I want to know if you can get accepted to USC (University of Southern California) without taking any AP classes?

Or maybe just one?

No. Unless you win a national championship or something then MAYBE.

I actually know someone who is there now (HS class of 2007) from NJ ,I think, had one AP course (possibly none)…sibling is applying this year; I’ll let you know if he/she gets in…similar course rigor…

I think it is a HIGH reach for you to get in with no AP classes, UNLESS your school doesn’t offer them. On USC’s website it specifically says that an applicant “should pursue AP classes whenever possible”. If you don’t have AP classes, then I would recommend a 4.00 UW GPA and VERY HIGH test scores. Good luck. :)

Excuse me, but the previous replies are incorrect – at least technically.

A reasonably strong gpa with Honors classes and no AP’s, and reasonably good scores (not 2400, but strong, like 2100+), can very well get you into USC. We know such a recent admit. Naturally it does help if you have AP’s, but it is not essential.

If you have no AP classes because you just didn’t want to take hard courses, no.

If you have no AP classes for some other reason… they’d still help a lot, but it depends on the rest of your application.

Ahh, so now we’re telling people that it’s possible to get into a Top 30 college without APs.

Don’t worry, folks. If you’re aiming for a Top 40 instead, don’t sweat yourself and don’t waste your time taking APs. Just a bunch of honors and get 2100+. …

Beretta: actually, I have no motive to lie about this…I have NO idea why USC admitted the students they did from our HS; we have about 15 AP’s available’ very rigorous admit process into AP…just stating facts…

not saying that one shouldn’t take AP courses, etc…just that it doesn’t seem to be as “black or white” as some other schools in terms of admissions…

yes you can. i know someone from my high school who got into the film program with only very minimal AP classes (1-2). and our school offers 27 AP courses. she had a strong art portfolio though. so i think if you’re very talented in one area, they might forgive you. but if you don’t have a special talent, i strongly recommend you to take APs. don’t slack!

Beretta, in the case I just cited, the student’s program was heavily filled with Honors classes. It is also a very well-reputed private high school. As with another school just mentioned by a replier, the school I mention had abundant AP offerings, proving that AP in itself is not what is sought by colleges. I’m also guessing that she probably articulated well her statement of purpose. Having a very focused application is something that most CC’ers underestimate as a factor in results.

If colleges heavily weighted their decisions by number of type of AP courses, they would never be able to distinguish between the thousands of applicants to each college that have the same number of AP’s, extremely similar GPA’s, and the same range of scores.

Everything is relative in admissions. Everything. That’s why a different candidate I’m thinking of (same school) got into USC with an UW 3.2, but a very high SAT score (2300+) and lots of AP’s in her field.

My school only offers 8 APs and you are only allowed to take them junior and senior years. By the end of senior year, I’ll have taken two, but only because all of them are in the science or math fields except AP Lit and Government. While I admit that you shouldn’t slack off just because you can, I don’t think USC is expecting me to take a ridiculous amount of APs when they would all overlap in one given year.

We have AP Stats and Calculus, but both have a pre-req of Trig. I didn’t finish trig until junior year, so unless I wanted to double up on math senior year (no thank you) I could only choose one.

We also have AP chem and AP bio, but both are offered the same class period, and because so few people sign up to take them, aren’t always offered year to year, and both require pre-reqs of bio 1 and chem 1.

AP English is murder, only offered senior year, and I didn’t feel it was worth the GPA kill, so I opted for a dual-enrollment college course instead.

I’ve heard people from other schools complain about APUSH, but the APUSH at my school is quadruple murder. Students in that class get 5+ hours of homework a night, just for the one class, and not many make it out with a B.

To be perfectly honest, I’d much rather get an A in an honors class (which gets the same weight as AP at my school) than a B in an AP. I know what I’m capable of, and I do push myself, but I’m not about to overload myself with school work.

Besides, my schedule has not been easy. I’ve taken all honors (except for math because that’s my weakest, except this year I went into AP Stats).

Anyways, I have not been accepted to USC (yet!) but I don’t feel that I’m the type of candidate the AdComs would throw away in the first shot. I feel that I’m fairly competitive with people who applied.

I have always had the sense that USC looks deeper into people than that.

I got in with just one real AP.

I’m taking AP Calculus AB right now.

My school requires all sophomores to take AP World History or AP Euro (So it doesn’t really count)

My school’s a prestigious public high school though, so they might consider the rigor of my classes even though they’re not AP.

Oh, wow, and here I was thinking that taking I might not get in because I will have only taken 5 AP classes out of 10 offered and chose not to take any AP math or science. :stuck_out_tongue: Well, this is a relief, I guess! Though, of course, there will always be a lot of people who have taken 8+, so…we’ll see.

I hope you can. My son’s high school doesn’t offer any AP classes. He is taking two community college classes, though (one last semester, one this). Hopefully that helps too.

I think it depends on your circumstances.

I attend a fairly prestigious boarding high school which chooses not to offer any AP/IB classes so that the curriculum is not restricted (as in, the teachers don’t want to have to be limited to the test material). Therefore, I didn’t take any… and I still got in.

That said, I have been taking very high-level courses (i.e., college level Chinese, economics, computer science… etc). Most colleges just seem to want to make sure you are challenging yourself.

Then again – if your school offers a ton of APs, and you didn’t take any of them? I don’t know. I assume it would weigh against you, at least a little bit.

No. And if so, that sucks because the majority of us would have worked for nothing.

If you don’t take any AP classes (not one), you’re not USC material in my opinion. I didn’t bog myself down with like 12 AP classes but I did challenge myself to the highest extent I could.

I agree with the statement that it may work if you didn’t have AP classes offered at your school, but I would guess that USC would still want you to go the extra mile to take community college classes.

I hope this is true. I’m a junior and I want to go to USC Film School. I took 1 honors my freshman year 4 my sophmore year 3 my junior year and ill be taking 1 honors and 2 ap my senior year. I recieved all A’s and high B’s in these courses. Does anyone else know someone who was accepted to the film school who didn’t take an insane amount of honors/APs?

I got in with just one AP.

This is just an opinion…

I think students who apply to schools at SC where auditions or portfolios are considered may find the admitting criteria different. If a potential music performance major applied to Thornton and has a dismal audition and can barely play the instrument 10 AP classes are not going to make a difference in that student being selected.

An applicant must be accepted to the university and then selected by the particular school.

You should take AP classes if its going to benefit what you want to study at USC. I’m 100% sure they take that into consideration. I took all math/science honors/AP courses offered and I want to major in engineering. I didn’t take APUSH or AP gov’t.

There is no doubt that you could get into USC without APs, but it’s not recommended. If you really want to get into USC, then you need to show them you have high goals. A great way to show that is by taking AP classes.
