The title says it all. I was just wondering if there are people who got accepted to schools such as Andover, Hotchkiss, Choate, bershire and a lot more... by doing a phone interview.

No, of course not. No one who does phone interviews get accepted, which is exactly why schools offer phone interviews to begin with

Tom, I’d guess you’re trying to be humorous but your post might come across to some as mean-spirited.

Plus - never end a sentence with a preposition!

Why they offer phone interview then? to weed out those no-so-serious candidates?

I am also wondering whether alum interview falls into the same category.

I know for a fact that lower tier schools take international students by phone interview.

I’m afraid Tomthecat is right. Admission via phone interview is impossible, it’s only offered as a cruel joke. Sorry if this is news to anyone.

First, I agree with TomTheCat, no chance of acceptance. Second, mainer95 is correct, never end a sentence with a preposition, the sentence should be: No one who does phone interviews get accepted, which is exactly why schools offer phone interviews to begin with biotch.

hahahaha don’t listen to them.

it would definitely be beneficial if you actually went on campus but if that’s not possible, well what can you do… phone interviews aren’t the end of the world : P

When I asked it was hinted that if I didnt come to campus it would show litle comitment. Then again i come from the southern east coast and have the financial means to do it. If you really live far away or can’t afford it I don’t think it matters.

I called andover and they said they had no more spots for interviews until after Jan 15th and I am applying day student so… I have to have an alumni interview…

well i mean its not like its their fault u didnt schedule it in time. On the other hand they won’t know that when they review ur app

Schools conduct phone interview (or Skype interview) with international applicants all the time.

I would actually say a phone interview may be better than an Alumni interview for internationals. My alumni interviews were much more awkward and much less professional. That said, they were wonderful people and represented their school well.

Know this, if the school offers an option, it’s not a dead end (the point that both istoleyournose and Tom were trying to make).

That being said; the answer to your question is yes. I have personal, and successful, experience with this. One of my off campus interviewers told me this about an interview, specifically an off campus interview. It most certainly can hurt my application and it is unlikely it will help the application. He said most on campus interviews fall into this category also, though, it is possible for it to help you as the interviewer will be able to argue for his/her candidate for the exceptional case (which would not happen in an off campus interview, regardless of how exceptional someone may be). I tend to believe that phone interviews with an admissions officer falls into the category of having the possibility of helping. Though, there are a few conditions. Firstly, you must have the interview with an admissions officer as opposed to an alum conducting the interview through a phone (or a VoIP service in my case, from India–I spoke with an alum). Secondly, your awesome attributes–those which would get you that “exceptional” status in an on campus interview–need to be conveyed to the interviewer, which is more difficult on a phone interview (as an aside, some people are better at phone interviews, but no one is better at conveying his/her qualities through voice than in person).

TLDR–it’s not going to make or break you.

Yeah, you can. It’s a myth that it is not grammatical to end a sentence with a preposition. It’s probably better not to, you are right, but there is nothing wrong with it. Especially when the relation is implicit.

LOL
At ** Everything ** on this thread.

2010, if you don’t live nearby Andover, you can not apply as a day students. Andover has a list of towns where residents are allowed to apply as day students.

But I do live near andover in one of the towns specified…

FayMom: That is a list of towns who CANNOT apply as BOARDING students.
Technically you could drive 45 mins to an hour to get there if you REALLY want to go there but don’t want to board.

then it’s your fault for waiting so long to schedule an interview

The thing is I scheduled in October but I had to change the date because of the January SSAT(which I recently decided to take).

I was originally applying as a boarder(so I would have had until Feb.) but then I read this

"As you are aware, students from certain cities/towns are able to choose whether to apply to Phillips Academy as day students or as boarding students. Your choice is a one-time-only option that must be made when the application is submitted to the admission office.

However, if you reside in a nearby city/town and are also applying for financial aid, please understand that your financial aid award will be predicated on the day student tuition and will not include the additional cost associated with being a boarding student. You are, of course, welcome to apply as a boarding student, but your family will be responsible for the additional tuition necessary for you to live on campus if you are admitted and choose to enroll at Phillips Academy.
